INTERCHANGEABLE PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,766, dated July 16, 1895.
Application filed December 21, 1893. Serial No, 494,244:- (No model.)
To 00% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI A. HULTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Napoleon, in the county of Henry, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Interchangeable Pumps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmgs. v
The object of this invention is to provide a construction of pumps of that class known as lift and force in which the adaptation of the pump to varying conditions of work can be readily secured without a practically entire dismounting and reassemblage of the parts,
I so that a dealer, by providing himself with a few extra parts, may readily and easily change the character of the pump to suit it for use in connection with either deep or shallow wells or to discharge a greater or less quantity of water, all in accordance with the requirements of each particular demand, whereby the pump is rendered more compact and efficient and durable and more easily set up.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved pump. Fig. 2 is an enlargel central vertical section through the casting, with the cylinders shown in position and broken away, showing also the valve in the chamber of the casting. Fig. 3 is a top plan of the casting shown in Fig. 2 with the gasket broken away. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the means for operating the valve in the casting. Fig. 5 shows in elevation the different storage or forcing cylinders with their collars removed. Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views. 7 As hereinafter described, the main or lowe cylinder and the upper storage or forcing cylinder are each removably connected with a chambered casting in such manner that the ready change of both cylinders for others of different capacities can be accomplished.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the main or lower the lower cylinder is detachably engaged and j by which it is supported. This casting is furf ther provided upon its lower side, upon one side of the center,- with a depending boss or nipple o to which is designed to be connected in any suitable manner the underground discharge-pipe A.

The pump-rod is jointed at suitable intervals and connected by any well-known form of coupling e to allow of ready separation when desired.
The tube D forms the discharge-pipe and at its upper end carries the discharge-spout D, upon which is mounted the bracket D G is a valve within the chamber of the casting B, as seen inFig. 2, and this valve is designed to close the outlet from said chamber through the pipe or tube D or through the pipe A, as occasion may require. The valve may be of any sort fitted for the purpose, but is preferably a ball-valve, as shown, and, as the outlets from the chamber to the said pipes D and A are in the same vertical plane, when the one is closed the other will be open. This valve is carried by a rod G, preferably flexible, and the manner of attachment is preferably by means of a screw-threaded bolt g, which is suspended from the rod and extends through the valve, being provided with adjusting-nuts 9' above and below the valve, as seen in Fig. 2, to provide for accurate and mi- IOU nute adjustmentwhen necessary. H is a casting having a transverse oblong slot h, as seen best in Fig. 4., and beneath the said slot a recess it, through the bottom of which passes the upper end of the rod G, said rod receiving a nut h above the said lower or bottom portion, within the recess, and another not It below thesame, all as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, whereby accurate and minute adjustment of the rod may be had when required.
I is a lever having a circular boss or porlion 2', which is offset laterally from the handle portion of the lever and works in the oblong slot of the casting H. It is eccentrically pivoted, as seen at i, to the bracket D When it is desired to operate the valve G, so as to allow the water to flow through the pipe D or through the discharge A, the lever I is turned in the one direction or the other, which causes the portion 2' of the lever to travel in the oblong slot of the casting H and throws the rod G up or down, and consequently moves the valve from its seat on one of the said pipes to its seat on the other. The Ohlong slot permits of the necessary movement of the eccentric portion of the lever without distorting the rod G, allowing it to move in a straight line without binding.
The pipe 0 is closed at its upper end by the portion 0 which carries the guide 0', and this pipe thus serves as the air-chamber to cushion the stroke and enable me to get a continuous flow of water, as will be readily understood.
The forcing or regulating cylinder L and the main cylinder are to be of didering capacity, according to the character of work to be performed and the varying circumstances under which the pump is used. I therefore provide for the ready change of these cylinders, and preferablyin the following manner: The openings in the upper face or head of the casting B are in a straight line and the central oneis the one adapted to receive the lower end of the storage or regulating cylinder. This opening is-countersunk, as seen at a, in .Fig. 2, to receive a gasket J, the bottom wall of the countersunk portion being preferably formed with a rib j, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, to hold the gasket against displacement, and K is a flanged collar, the flange of which is fitted to the countersunk opening, as seen in Fig. 2. The collar is provided with an internallythreaded opening, into which is screwed the forcing or regulating cylinder L, as seen in Fig. 2, or the cylinder may be held to the collar in any other suitable manner. It is preferably connected by threaded engagement. The flanges of the different collars are made of the same external diameter, so as to all fit the countersunk opening, but the central threaded openings thereof are of different sizes, so as to receive forcing or regulating cylinders of different diameters. The cylinders are held to their respective collars in any suitable way, and the collars with their cylinders are interchangeable and any one may be readily removed and replaced by one of a different diameter. The collar is placed in position with its flange resting in the countersink and upon the gasket, as seen in Fig. 2, and the forcing-cylinder is retained in its position by a plate or cap M, which rests upon the upper end of the cylinder and is extended upon opposite sides and concaved to partially embrace the tubes 0 and D, and this cap is held detachably in place by rods M, which pass through opposite sides of the cap and through the lugs m of the casting B, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, receiving a nut at top and bottom, as seen in Fig. 1 at m. The cap has an opening for the passage of the pump-rod. When it is desired to remove the forcing-cylinder the nuts m are unscrewed and the pump-rod uncoupled, the cap lifted 0E, and the cylinder with its collar removed, and one of a different size is then put in its place and the cap secured in place and the pump-rod joined. Of course the bucket or valve of the forcing-cylinder will have to be changed with each change of forcing-cylinder. The separability of the pump-rod permits of this.
When it becomes necessary to remove the main or working cylinderA the same maybe readily unscrewed from the boss or nipple on the under side of the casting B and one of a different size put in its place.
When the pump is to be used in connection with a wind-mill the pump-rod E is to be connected with the mill in any suitable manner. When operated by hand, the handle F is worked in the ordinary manner.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as new is- 1. In a pump of the class described, the combination of a chamber, as B, provided with cylinder-receiving apertures with two series of cylinders of different diameters each of which is provided with a coupling adapted to the openings in the chamber, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with the main lift cylinder of a pump, of a chambered casting to which the same are removably connected, said casting having a recess in vertical line with the said main cylinder and a series of flanged collars all of the same diameter fitted to said recess and each carryinga cylinder of different diameter, substantially as specified.
3. In a pump of the class described, the combination ofa series of lift cylinders, a casting having an opening in its upper side in line with an opening in its lower side which lower opening is adapted for the connection of lift cylinders, a series of flanged collars adapted to fit the upper opening and each carrying a force cylinder differing in diameter from the other cylinders of the series, a cap plate connected with and for closing the upper end of the cylinders carried by said collars and means for detachably connecting said cap plate to the casting for the purpose ICC 7 542,766 a p e of holding said cylinders in position, substantiaily as specified.
4;. In a pump of the'ciass described, the combination of a casting, as B, having three openings in its upper side and two in its lower side, two of each being in line and all being adapted for the connection therewith of pipes and cylinders, a main cylinder removably sechamber and pump-lever support a pipe extended to form an upper discharge and a pipe connected with the remaining opening on its lower side to form an underground discharge, together with means for changing the direction of the discharge from the chamber, substantially as specified.
