FORCE-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,188, dated February 25, 1896.

Be it known that I, ORBIN F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Osceola, in the county of Clark and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Force-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are, first, to promote convenience of access to the valves and valve-seat of a force-pump, and further to so arrange and construct the pump that all of the parts necessary to be separated when access is had to the valve are located on the same horizontal plane; and my object is further to provide adevice composed of a single piece of leather or the like adapted to serve as a check-valve and also as a gasket for all of the connections necessary to be disengaged when access is had to the valve.
\Vith these objects in view my invention consists, first, in the construct-ion, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device whereby all of the connections are made on the same horizontal plane.
My invention consists further in the construction of a combined valve and gasket for two connections formed complete in one piece 5 and my invention consists further in the arrangement and combination of a stirrup with the parts above and below said connection whereby areadily detachable and adjustable connection is established, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are elevations of the cylinders and accompanying parts taken from different sides. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the line a; 00 of Fig. 2. Referring to the accompanying drawings, the referencefletter A is used to designate the suction-cylinder having an open bottom, and
A a force-cylinder communicating with its top and in alignment therewith. A is a plunger-rod extended vertically through the cylinder and having a piston A within the forcecylinder and a bucket or sliding valve in the suction-cylinder, all of the ordinary construction.
B designates a tube leading from the intersection of the two cylinders downwardly parallel with the cylinder and preferably formed integral with the walls thereof and terminating in the same horizontal plane as the cylinder.
O designates the valve-seat composed of a single piece and having the well-tube 0 secured into its lower end and provided with a passage 0 leading from thence upwardly, and C is a passage leading from the top of the device in close proximity to the other passage to a screw-seat C adapted to receive the discharge-pipe C The said passages O and C are adapted to communicate with the cylinder A and tube 13, and O designates a flange formed on the edge of the valve-seat adapted to surround the lower edge of said cylinder and tube when placed in position thereupon.
D designates the combined valve and gasket made of a single piece of leather and provided with an opening at D so as not to obstruct the passage between the tube B and the passage 0 that leads to the dischargepipe. This gasket fits within the said flange C and the lower edge of the suction-pipe, and said tube is placed thereupon.
To produce a detachable and adjustable connection between those parts I have provided a stirrup F, pivotally attached to the cylinder A and provided with a set-screw F in its central portion. A screw-seat F is formed in the under side of the part D to receive said set-screw, so that when the two parts are placed in position they will be closely drawn together when the screw is tightened and provide a tight joint between the cylinder and valve-seat.
In practical operation, assuming that the bucket is at the top of the suction-cylinder and the piston at the top of the force-cylinder, a downward stroke of the plunger-rod will first close the valve at the bottom of the cylinder, and the piston in the top cylinder ould force the water contained therein out through the tube 13. Then when the plungerrod is again elevated all of the water in the suction-cylinder above the amount necessary to fill the forcecylinder will be forced through said tube, thus producing a steady flow through the discharge-pipe during the operation of the pump-handle. TVhen it is desirable to have access to the valve of the interior of the cylinder, all that is necessary is the releasal of the screw in the stirrup, when the upper and lower portions of the pump will be completely separated and the valve and gas ket may be readily removed and a new one substituted therefor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States'therefor, is
1. An improved force-pump comprising a pumpcylinder a force-cylinder above andin alignment therewith, a segmental tube formed integral with the cylinder and leading from a point near the top downwardly and terminating in the same horizontal plane, a valve-seat having a portion adapted to receive the said combined cylinder and tube, a combined valve and gasket in said valveseat, a passage leading from the bottom of said segmental tube downwardly through the valve-seat and then upwardly and a well-tube connected with the Valve-seat and communicating with said passage and means for detachably connecting the cylinder with the valve-seat for the purposes stated.
2. An improved force-pump, comprising the following elements, in combination, to wit; a suitable suction-cylinder with its lower end open, a force-cylinder above the suctioncylinder and in alignment therewith, a plun ger-rod passed through said cylinder, at piston therein within the force-cylinder, and a bucket within the suction-cylinder, a tube formed integral withthe suction-cylinder and leading from its top domiwardly and ending on the same horizontal plane as the cylinder, a valve-seat adapted to admit said suctioncylinder to rest upon its top surface, a welltube connected therewith, a passage adapted to coincide with saidtube and a seat adapted to receive a discharge-pipe formed at the other end of said passage a combined valve and gasket adapted to be interposed between the valve-seat and cylinder provided with an opening at the end of the aforesaid tube, a stirrup pivoted to the suction-cylinder and adapted to pass under the valve-seat, and aset-screw in said stirrup adapted to engage the under side of said valve-seat, substantially as, and for the purposes, stated.
