VALVE MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVlLLIAM I. MORGAN, a citlzen of the United States, residing at Seaford, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve Mechanism, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to valve mechanism for hydraulic apparatus, and has particular reference to' apparatus for controlling the application of hydraulic pressure to a jack or other fluid pressure apparatus, such apparatus comprising means whereby the pressure upon the jack or other apparatus may be quickly and conveniently released.
One object of the invention is to provide peculiarly advantageous valve mechanism of the character described which shall contain all the necessary valves and passages for the control and conveyance of the fluid from a reservoir to the pump and from the pump to the apparatus operated by the hydraulic pressure, as a jack, the valve mechanism being connected with the pump by a single pipe which contains the to and from passage to the pump, the valve mechanism being detachably connected to the pump structure. The valve structure being thus separated from that of the pump, it can, in case of any derangement of the valves, be separated therefrom, a new valve structure substituted, and in this manner valve structures may be repaired or re-adjusted without interfering with the continuous operation of the pump for a longer time than is necessary to detach one valve structure and attach another. This is an important consideration in apparatus of the character described for the reason that it is peculiarly liable to be deranged by reason of sand or other foreign material becoming lodged therein. This is due to the fact that the apparatus must be used out of doors and under various temporary and makeshift conditions and where the best available water supply is often full of dirt.
The valve structure of the present invention is peculiarly adapted to fulfil the above conditions.
The valve structure referred to comprises inlet and outlet valves for the pump and a release valve for'the jack or other hydraulically operated apparatus. The inlet and outlet valves, or what may be designated as the pump valves, may be located adjacent to the pump. On the other hand, the pressure release valve for the jack should be located near the jack so that the pressure can be controlled from that vicinity. According to the present invention, therefore, the valve structure containing the inlet and outlet valves and that containing the pressure release valve are so mounted that the two valve structures are separable so that they may be placed at varying distances apart, according to the relative locations of the pump and jack. Where the jack and pump are close together the two valve structures may be screwed together, as shown in the drawing.
A further object of the invention is to provide valves which are peculiarly fitted for the duty which they are to perform. It has already been noted that apparatus of the character to which the present invention relates is quite liable to have sand or other foreign substance find its way to the interior of the apparatus. This foreign matter becoming lodged upon valve seats would prevent the proper closing of the valves and produce improper operation of the ap paratus. Also, the scratching and wearing away of the valves is liable to cause a poor fit between the respective valves and valve seats. According to the present invention, ball valves in vertical passages are provided. The result is that none of the valve seats are flat, and therefore sand or other foreign matter cannot find lodgment on them. Also, the valves are self-grinding so that any abrasions onthe seats which may occur will be automatically corrected. p
The invention with respect to a preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying. drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a pump and valve mechanism, and Fig. 2 is a crosssection of a valve operating rod which may be used.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a casing or body having therein the to and from passage 2 to the pump P. The passage 2 communicates with a vertical stralght passage 3 formed in the caslng l. Thls pas sage has an inlet valve 4 which opens to admit water or other fluid to the pump through the inlet passage 5, which latter will be connected with a source of supply. Upon the other side of the to and from passage 2 there is located in the passage 3 an outlet valve 6 which is opened by the pressure of the fluid from the pump to admit the same to the jack or other hydraulic apparatus which is connected through. the pressure passage 7 which extends through the casing 1 containing the release valve. The valves 4 and 6 are ball valves for reasons hereinbefore set forth. The balls are of different diameters, as shown, and they cooperate with seats of different diameters, as also shown. The passage 3 comprises sections of different diameters, as shown, to accommodate the different sized balls, and in view of the fact that the passage is straight it may be formed by boring, which materially facilitates the manufacture besides producing a compact and easily accessible structure. The end of the casing is closed by a screw plug 19, as shown. Between the valve 4 and the valve 6 is a ribbed rod 16, shown in cross-section in Fig. 2, and between the valve 6 and the plug 19 is inserted a similar rod 18. These rods serve to limit the range of movement of the balls 4 and 6, and it will be observed that the ribs provide passages through which the fluid can flow, and that exterior grooves are provided in the rods 16 and 18, which grooves are respectively opposite the passages 2 and 7 so that the flow is not obstructed, no matter in what position the rods may be.
The release valve structure comprising the casing l is detachably connected to the ump valve structure, as before described. This last valve structure has a passage 27 which is connected in any suitable way with the supply reservoir, the connection between which and the pressure passage 7 is controlled by a ball valve 24. This ball 24 cooperates with a seat which is formed upon the end of a nipple 22 which is screwed into the casing 1, the position of the valve seat being thereby adjustable. The nipple can be locked in any adjusted position by means of a lock nut 23. Mounted within the nipple is a releasing screw 25 having branched passage 26 which communicates with a passage 27, but is normally closed from the passage 7 by the seating of the valve 24. The screw 25 has an external groove to register with the passage 27 so as to permit the water to flow freely at different positions of the screw. When the screw 25 is screwed up to unseat the valve 24, the pressure is released from the jack or other apparatus and exhausts through passage 27. But one plug is necessary to confine the balls 4 and 6, as the passage 3 is made sufliciently large to permit the ball 4 to be dropped from the top and then the larger ball 6 is put in to be confined by the plug 19.
Having thus described my invention, I declare that what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-

The combination'with a pump, of a valve mechanism comprising a casing con- 'taining inlet and outlet valves for said pump and constructed to retain said valves in operative positions, a second casing constructed with a passage leading from said outlet valve toward the apparatus to be operated, a ball valve for relieving pressure in the passage in said second casing, and a screw having a passage for the fluid mounted in said casing and adapted to contact with the ball of the valve to lift it from its seat.

4. The combination with a pump, of a valve structure separate from said pump and detachably connected thereto by a single inlet and outlet pipe, said valve structure comprising a straight vertical passage containing inlet and outlet valves for the pump, said valves consisting of balls adapted to seat upon shoulders in said passage, said inlet and outlet pipe opening at an angle into said straight vertical passage between the said valves, a pressure passage opening into said straight vertical passage outside said outlet valve, an inlet opening into said straight vertical passage outside said inlet valve, a ball valve for relieving pressure in said pressure passage, and a screw having a passage for the fluid mounted in said casing and adapted to contact With the ball of the valve to lift it from its seat.
5. The combination with a pump, of valves therefor, a pressure passage leading from the outlet valve of said pump, a casing through which said pressure passage extends, a ball valve for releasing pressure in said passage, and a screw having a passage for the fluid mounted in said casing and adapted to contact With the ball of the valve to lift it from its seat.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature, 15 in presence of tWo Witnesses.
