CHECK-VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 21, 1914.
Application filed OctoberS, 1913. Serial No. 794,114.
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM E. SULLIVAN,
a citizen of Canada, residing at Coaticook, 1n the Province of Quebec and Domnuon of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Check-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved check valve especially adapted for use in a pipe connection between a steam pump and a steam boiler being also adapted for other analogous uses, one object of the invention being to provide an improved'check valve which will not pound when the pump is running at full speed, another object being to efli'ect improvements in the construction of the parts of the valve to enable the valve to be readily assembled and disassembled and also to be manufactured at minimum cost.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a longitudinal central sectional view of a check valve constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line aa of Fig. 1.
The valve casing 1 is here shown as cylindrical in form and is formed at one end witha reducer 2 having a threaded opening 3 to efiect a coupling with a pipe 4: leading to a boiler or the like. The other end of the casing 1 is provided with a slightly reduced portion 5 having external screw threads 6 and providing an annular shoulder 7. The base 8 in said end of the casing l is formed with a cylinder 9 which is concentric with and spaced from the wall of the casing the said cylinder being closed as at 10 at the end opposite the steam pipe and open as at 11 at the opposite end and being screw threaded in the opposite end as at 12. In practice the casing with its base and cylindeer are formed preferably as a single casting and a duct 13 is also formed connecting the end 10 of the cylinder with the wall of the casing 1, the said duct forming a vent and being provided with a valve plug 14 which may be opened or closed as desired. The wall of the cylinder, at a point a suitable distance from the base 8 is provided with openings 15;
A reducer 16 is screwed to the threaded end 5 of the casing and has a threaded porpipe 18 leading from a steam pump to supply the boiler with water. This reducer by reason of its coupling or connection with the casing 1 may be readily removed therefrom to afford access to the cylinder 9 and associated parts.
A cylinder valve 19 is fitted and adapted to play smoothly in the cylinder 9 and is formed at a point intermediate its ends with a diaphragm or partition 20 whereby a chamber 21' is formed in the end of the valve opposed to the head 10 of the cylinder and a chamber 22 is formed in the end of the valve opposed to the water inlet. This valve operates across the opening 15 and is normally held in closed position, across said openings by means of a spring 23. The valve is here shown as provided with annular. grooves 24 and packings 25 in said groove. The inner end of the valve is beveled as at 26. An annulus 27 is also provided which is adapted to be screwed in the opening 12, has a polygonal head 28 adapting it to be engaged and turned by a wrench or spanner and the said annulus in the side opposed to the valve 19 is formed with a flared valve seat 29 adapted to receive said valve. \Vhen the reducer 16 has been detached from the valve casing 1 access to the valve seat and to the valve may be readily attained and by first unscrewing the annulus providing the valve seat the valve may be removed'from the cylinder for purposes of repair or adjustment.
In the operation of my improved check valve the valve 19 moves outwardly past the o ening 15 at each stroke of the pump, thereliy allowing feed water to be forced by the pump through the opening 15 and the casing and the pipe 4 into the boiler by the valve closing against back pressure from the boiler, the spring 23 facilitating l the closing movement of the valve. Owing to the provision of the cylinder 9 in which the, valve operates the head of the valve is prevented from being subjected to the steam pressure and said valve is only subjected to peripheral pressure at such points that are uncovered by the openings 15.
Hence the valve is balanced, is very isus ceptible, operates veryreadily, easily -fand smoothly and is prevented from pounding when the pump is running at high speed.
While I haveherein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be loo made in the form, proportion and construction of vthe several parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention and Within the scope of the appended claim.
' Having thus described my invention, I claim: Y
A check valve of the class described comprising a casing having a discharge opening at one end, provided at the opposite end With .a reduced threaded portion, a base end With a cylinder extending from the 'base and arranged in the casing, said cylinder being closed at the outer end and open at the intake end provided in its Wall with one or more openings, a cylindrical valve mounted for operation in the cylinder, an annulus detachably secured in the open end of the cylinder. and forming a seat for the valve and a reducer coupling detachably secured to the reduced threaded intake end of said casing.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
HIRAM E. SULLIVAN.
