Description

'N M d l.) v we. WILSO ROLLING snum:
No. 529,771. Patented Nov. 2'7, 1894.
WITNESSES:
INVENTOR 7%%@ V S, BWQ Z? ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT I OFFICE.
JAMES GODFREY WILSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ROLLING SHUTTER, 8;.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,771, dated November 27, 1894.
Application filed March 21,1894. Serial No. 504,487. (No model) To all whom it may concern;
Be it known thatLJAMEs GODFREY WILSON,
a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a ments in rolling or flexible shutters,'&c., made usually of closely fitting wooden slats strung on wires, cables, or bands; and it'has for its especial object to render such shutters, 850., substantially fire-proof.
With this object in view my invention consists essentially in inclosing the individual slats inmetallic casings, and also in providing an additional facing or packing of refractory material at the exposed portions.
The nature of my said invention will best be understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a sectional perspective of a rolling shutter constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of a modified construction.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, the letter a designates a series of slats strung on bands I) in a well known manner to form a rolling 0r flexible shutter. The wooden core of each slat a is inclosed in a sheet metal casing c which surrounds it and has its opposite ends meeting, or nearly meeting at point d. The sheet metal is drawn closely and tightly over the wooden core in any usual manner. I
In such applications of the shutter where it is not necessary that the back should be protected, the metal casing is made in the 40 form of a sheathing covering the front or exposed portion of the slat only. This construction is adapted for book, bank and other cases, as well as for shutters.
To afford additional protection against fire 4 5 at the exposed portions of the shutters, &c., a
packing c (Fig. 2), of asbestos, or other refractory material may be introduced between the core and the metallic casing of each slat.
I can also substitute for the wooden slats, 5o
slats composed of other substances, such as pulp, compressed asbestos, or mineral wool.
What I claim is- 1. As an improved article of manufacture,
a rolling or flexible shutter formed of slats having a core of wood or the like, a sheath- 6o ing of metal, and an interposition of refractory material, substantially as specified.
- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signedmy name, in presence of two witnesses, this 16th dayof March, 189-1.
