To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J AMES-GODFREY WIL- SON, a subject of Edward VII, King of Great Britain, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Shutters, Doors, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.

My invention relates to certain improvements in and relating to shutters, doors, &c. but particularly relates to doors and shutters that are provided with a metal sheathing.

The object of my improvement is to overcome a serious disadvantage that at present attaches to articles of this sort; and with this end in View my invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, such as will be hereinafter fully set forth and then specifically be designated by the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, Figure 1 is a broken isometric perspective of a shutter constructed in accordance with my improvement, and

Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in both figures of the drawings.

The particular-style of shutter which I have illustrated is composed of Wooden slats or bars hinged together, so as to fit closely and be capable of rolling, while the surfaces of these slats or bars are covered with sheet metal, with preferably a layer of asbestos interposed between the wood and the metal which covers the outer face of said bars.

I have ascertained that a shutter or door composed of Wooden bars or slats sheathed with metal is not fireproof for the following reason: When such a shutter is subjected to intense heat, the wood will be burned and will become charcoal. gases will be liberated which by their great pressure will pufi out and burst the metal sheathing, so that the fireproof quality of the latter is destroyed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the Wooden bars or slats; 2, themetal sheathing; 3, the asbestos interposed between the wooden bars or slats and the metal sheathing which covers the outside faces of' these bars or slats, and 4 the perforations through the sheathings of the variousbars or slats. If desired, these perforations may be plugged with any suitable fusible plug 5, as shown in the instance of the lower slat at Fig-2, although this is a mere matter of choice and has nothing to do with my invention.

Of course I do not wish to limit my invention to shutters or doors specifically, since it will be clear that my improvement may be applied in the instance of any supposed fireproof structure which comprises a core or'interior of wood and an external metal sheathing, such as metal-covered sliding or folding doors, window-casings, moldings, 850.

It will of course be clear that after the interior of the bars or slats is burned into charcoal the latter, being a very poor conductor of heat, will not interfere with the fireproof nature of the structure; also, while the asbestos may be used as above set forth it will be clear that the samemight be dispensed with altogether or other suitable material employed as a substitute, and I do not wish to be limited in this respect.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As an improved article of-manufacture, a fireproof structure comprising an inner core or portion of Woodand an exterior sheathing of metal having its outer face perforated, substantially as set forth. 7
