To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES M. BOSCOWITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle -Guards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to means for guarding against the accidental mistake, by pharmacists and those engaged in handlingaud dispensing drugs, of compounding poison in the preparation of medicines.

One object of myinvention is the provision of means requiring mechanical manipulation before access can be had to the bottle containing the poison by removing the cork,and which will display a word or symbol indicating the poisonous character of the contents of the bottle, the said word or symbol being in sight in all positions of the bottle to apprise the dispenser of the deadly nature of the stuff he is handling.

A further object of my invention is a device to be applied to the neck of abottle and normally held over the cork and lips thereof by a yielding support which will admit of access to the contents of the bottle on the application of pressure to the said device sufficient to overcome the tension of the said yielding support, the latter returning the said device to a normal position on the removal of the pressure.

My invention consists, essentially, of a plate, cap, or tablet, which is preferably flanged, bearing a word or symbol indicating the deadly or dangerous character of the contents of the bottle, and yielding connections between the tablet and the bottle to hold and return the tablet to a position over the cork when not acted on by external means.

My invention also consists of the novel features which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which' Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the relative position of the tablet when the latter is pressed back and the bottle tipped for pouring out the contents. Fig. 3 is a modification.

The bottle A is .of the ordinary construction usually employed for holding medicines, and is provided with the stopper or cork a. The tablet B is attached to the neck of the bottle by means of a band C, the latter being, preferably, a spring baud sprung or clasped around the neck of the bottle. Yielding connections are interposed between the tablet and the band. In Figs. 1 and 2 these yielding connections are spring-arms D, and in Fig. 3 are ordinary spring hinges D. On the tablet is placed theword Poison or other .conventional symbol to designate the dangerous nature of the contents of the bottle. The word or symbol is conspicuously disposed so as to be observed at all times and in any of the usal positions of the bottle.

The spring-arms D are formed of Wire, and have coils d, which give a greater scope of movement to the tablet than if the said coils were not provided, besides permitting a limited movement of the tablet to and from the bottle, which may be advantageous under certain conditions, as, for instance, to clear the cork or stopper when pressing back the tablet to get at the contents of the bottle.

The tablet is preferably flanged, the flange encircling the stopper, and may have any desired form and be constructed from suitable material, as sheet metal. The projection 12 forms a finger-rest, upon which the finger obtains a purchase when pressing back the tablet.

To get at the contents of the bottle the tablet B must be pressed back before the stopper can be removed. This operation attracts the attention, and is designed to give a warning as to the dangerous character of the contents of the bottle, as the bottles containing harmless drugs will not be equipped with the invention. In addition to the required manipulation, the word or symbol imprinted on the tablet constitutes a visual warning, cautioning the dispenser. The instant the tahlet is released it is automatically returned to its original position by the yielding connections in the manner herein set forth.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A guard for bottles containing dangerous drugs,comprising a spring clamp for embracing the neck of the bottle, a tablet bearing a cautionary Word or symbol designed to rest normally over the cork in the bottle and adapted to swing to clear the cork, and means uniting the clamp and tablet for automatically returning the latter to its normal position.

2. A bottle-guard comprising a spring clamp for embracing the neck of the bottle, a tablet bearing-a cautionary word or symbol designed to rest normally over the cork in the bottle and adapted to swing to clear the cork, and spring arms connecting the clamp and the tablet, for the purposes set forth.

3. A bottle guard comprising a spring clamp for embracing the neck of the bottle, a tablet bearing a cautionary word or symbol designed to rest normally over the cork in the bottle, and spring arms connecting the clamp and tablet, said arms being each formed with a coil intermediate the clamp and tablet, all substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
