G. F. BARLOW.
BOTTLE STOPPER.

F. BARLOW, OF EAST LONG MEADOW, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pa1; 1; 1]) 5 3 9, 1913, Application filed May 6, 1913. Serial No. 765,882.
with a laterallyextending branch 7 which receives a loop 8 of a disk 9. This dish is constructed from a single piece of metal having a uniform thickness and a diameter greater than the diameter of the manipulating member so that the edges of the former are extended for considerable distances beyond the adjacent edges of the latter where they will be initially grasped by the lingers of the hand when an attempt is made to release the stopper from the neck of the bottle.
The disk 9 may be provided with a scalloped edge so as to define radial projections 10 upon which letters of suitable indicia may be stamped, printed or otherwise suitably formed, such as letters forming the word Poison or Caution or the like, while within the margin of the edges the body portion of the disk may have printed or otherwise suitably arranged thereon the skull and cross bones, as shown. From this construction it is evident that in attempting to remove the stopper from the bottle the disk 9 when grasped by the hand and pull applied thereto will be swung on its pivot on the extracting or manipulating member 2 with no pull whatever upon the stopper, the latter remaining in the neck of the bottle. Such movement of the member 9 when taken with the indieia will be sufllcient to warn the user that the bottle contains a drug that should be used only with the utmost care. After the member 9 is adjusted to an open or raised position, the lateral flange or bead at the upper end of the extracting or manipulating member 2 will be exposed where it may be readily grasped between the fingers and pull app ied thereto, so as to permit the stopper to be removed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and o icration of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to withoi'lt departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantag-es of this invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1.. A stopper for poison bottles, a manipulating member embracing the stopper and secured thereto and arranged at its upper end with an annular bead, and a disk:
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, Gnonon F. BARLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Long Meadow, in the county of Hampden and State of Massaclnisetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottle stoppers, and particularly to stoppers for use upon poison bottles or receptacles containing liquid that should be used with caution; and it has for its object the provision of an extracting element or manipulating portion secured to the cork at the manipulating end thereof and provided with a movably mounted member extending peripherally beyond the sides of the cork and the adjacent surfaces of the neck of the bottle whereby to be initially grasped between the fingers of the hand in an effort to remove the cork from the bottle and having arranged thereon a suitable symbol, such as a skull and cross bones and indicia such as the word Poison whereby when the member is lifted the attention of the person will be properly directed as to the nature of the contents of the bottle.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for facilitating the operation of applying the device to any well known form of stopper.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, showing the application thereof to a bottle; Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereto, showing the signifying member in its normal position; Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the signifying device in a partly raised position; Fig. 4.- is a horizontal section on line 4 lof Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 55 of Fig. 2.
The stopper 1 herein illustrated has secured thereto an extracting or manipulating member 2, the latter having circular walls 3 embracing the stopper and having portions 4. crimped or beaded circumferentially of the stopper. The walls 3 are extended above the stopper Where they are curved lata reinforcing wire 6. Said wire is provided hingedly mounted at one side of the bead of said member and normally resting thereon and provided with spaced radial projections extending laterally from the sides of the stopper.
2. A stopper for poison bottles, a manipu' lating member embracing the stopper and provided with an annular bead at its upper end, a reinforcing wire embraced by the Walls of the bead and having lateral portions, and a disk hingedly connected with the lateral portion of said reinforcing wire Copies of this patent may be obtained for GEORGE F. BARLOW.
