' IMPROVEMENT I N CARPET-BAGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,902, dated February 27, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ALBERT SONNEKALB and J oHN W. LIEB, ot' Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Attaching or Fastening `the Cloth or Bag to the Frames of Traveling-Bags and Carpet-Sacks 5 and we do hereby declare that the following is afnll, and exact description thereof, reference being had to4 the accompanying drawings and the letters ot" reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, We will proceed to 'describe its construction and operation.

vWe construct our carpet-sack and travelingbag frames with equal box-jaws, closing one Within the other, or in any other known form, and of any suitable metal or other material.

Near the inner edges of the jaws We fasten at suitable intervals hooks a, turned either down (a, Fig.`1) or up (et, Fig. 3) by means of rivets, screws, or other substantial fasteni ugs;

The edge ofthe cloth or bag We fold orturn over and stitch in the form of a hem, b, Fig. 4. Through this hein We run a rod, c, oi suitable size to lill the hem. le then place the hem containing the rod within the hooks a, Figs. 5 and 10, and then press the hooks down against the hem and rod so that the hooks will grasp them rmly, (,b, Figs. 6 and 11,) and thus substantially secure the cloth or bag to the frame or jaws.

Instead of detached hooks c, Fig. 1, a continuous hook extending the full length of the sides of the frame may be used, or the inner edges of the jaws or frame, if of metal, may be bent into the proper hook forni (a, Fig..2) to receive the hem and rod of the cloth or bag. WVhere the rods join at the angles of the frame e, Fig. 6, they may be lapped or mitered.

Figs. 7, 8, and 9 show the different chan ges the hook a undergoes when made from metal straps.

We consider our invention the cheapest and best mode of attaching the cloth to the frames of traveling-bags; and We accomplish the object of our invention mostly by machinery.

That Which We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The hooks a, the hem b, and the rod c, in combination, substantially for the uses and purposes as above described.
