SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,655, dated July 26, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE K. MORTON, of St. Thomas, Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and improved WV-allet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a cheap and eflicient wallet suitable for the carrying of papers, bank-bills, and the like which will involve a minimum amount of material in its manufacture and which, further, will be neat, light, and less bulky than the ordinary wallet and the contents of which may be inspected or removed with convenience and dispatch.

The invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter described, and defined in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wallet made in accordance with my invention and showing the same closed, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing the wallet open.

The wallet A in the form shown is fashioned to form a single pocket only with one fastening, though more pockets and fasten-' ings may be provided, if desired, and it is made in a single piece, its sides an a being continuous and sewed or otherwise secured together at each end, as at b. The material employed may be leather, paper, or canvas or other fabric, as may be preferred, with light strong linings, if necessary. The sides a are free from flaps, straps, and elastics, and they terminate in the same horizontal plane at the top, whereby they form an opening 0, which is directly in line with the interior of the wallet whether the latter is closed or open, and each side contains a suitable stilfening e e, through which the fasteners d d are attached, which add strength and assist in disengaging the fasteners.

To the inner surface of each side a a fastening devices 01 d are secured, adapted to engage each other, d indicating a ball, and d a socket adapted to receive and hold the ball, the two forming an ordinary ball-and-socket fastening, the members of which engage or look by simply pressing the sides of the wallet together.

WVhen engaged or locked, the fastening de- Vices form a stop which extends transversely across the interior of the wallet, across and outside of the papers or bills in the latter, and serve to retain such papers or bills, while at the same time a direct opening 0 is afforded at all times in line with the interior of the wallet. The opening thus provided permits a ready inspection of the contents of the wallet without disengaging the fastening devices, as the sides may be simply flexed outward at each side of the fastening; also, the opening permits a ready entrance of ones fingers to the interior at either side of the fastening for the purpose of pressing the sides apart and, with the assistance of the stiffening e e, quickly disengage such fastening. Further, the simple movement of entering ones fingers between the sides and slightly pressing the same apart both serves to disengage the fastening and to grasp either side for holding the wallet open with one hand while employing the other in the inspection or removal of the contents, the opening of the Wallet and the removal or inspection of or addition to its contents and again closing and locking the same being thus more conveniently effected than is possible with wallets of the ordinary form.

The wallet, it will be seen,is light, neat, of economical construction, and more convenient than others, while affording a secure receptacle for carrying papers and the like.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
