COMBINED FIREPLACE AND GRATE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,610,dated November 6, 1894.

useful improvements in fire-places and grates,

and it has for its objects among others to provide means whereby the fire back may be made in sections and those easily placed in position or removed any one independent of the others when occasion may require.

Another object is to so construct the upper part of the fire place back and top that the bricks can be taken out from the frontor put in place after the entire grate is set in position, thus making room for the grate setters to work and for filling in the back cavities after fixing the grate.

Other objects and advantages of theinvention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims;

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings,which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification,and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of afire-place and grate embodying our improvements, with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same on the line Fig. 2- 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows in perspective the fireplace frame and the accessories thereof, in-

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the fire-place frame of any desired form having at its lower edge upon the inner face the surrounding vertical portion A having the lugs a and the rearwardly-extending horizontal or substantially horizontal flange. a as seen in Figs. 2 and 3.

A are vertical bars extending from the rear edge of the horizontal flange a as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, the upper ends of these vertical bars being secured to the substantially horizontal flange b of the hood B which is a part of or secured to the upper part of the frame A.

The rear portion of the hood is provided with a large opening B as shown in Fig. 3, over which is placed the removable frame E, which has flanges e at its ends to embrace the side portions of the hood, and near its lower edge provided with the openings e through which pass the lugs D of the clamp piece D, the pins or vfastenings D serving also to hold this removable frame in place as shown in Fig. 2. This frame has also a flange c at the upper side to embrace the horizontal flange b of the hood as shown in Fig 2.

It will be readily understood that by the construction and arrangement of parts above described the bricks can be removed or replaced from the front by simply removing the pins or fasteningsD and removing the clamp piece D, when the bricks can be resliding register plate 9 operating in conjunc-' moved or inserted in place as indicated in tion with apertures in the damper G as shown 1n Fig. 1. These dampers are provided with the lugs f g which extend from the lower edge substantially at a right angle thereto as seen in Fig. 2 and which serve as stops to limit the movement of the dampers by coming in contact with the inclined wall of the hood.

Near the back or rear of the side portions A of the frame are the lateral projections or pins 0., back of which the rear vertical portions or legs H of the basket pass and by which the same are held in position yet permitting of ready removal of the basket when desired.

H are the front legs of the basket.

I is the grate mounted at the ends on suitable pivots i removably mounted in the end pieces of the basket.

J is a foot pedal pivoted at j to some part as one of the front legs of the basket, and having a portion extending toward the front as shown atj, and aportion extending rearward and having pivotally connected therewith as at J2 an arm or link J the other end of which is plvotally connected as at h with the lug h depending from the grate near the end. By means of this pedal the grate may be shaken or dumped. In order to allow the grate to be agitated without danger of dumping we provide the lever K pivoted at k to the under side of the front of the basket and bent so that when moved in one direction it will be thrown into the path of the lever J and permit said lever to move only sufficiently to rock or shake the grate without dumping it. A stop pin 7c is provided for limiting the movement of the lever K, as seen in Fig. 2. The upper face of the lever K at its front end is provided with a ledge or shoulder as shown best in Fig. 1 for a purpose which will now be explained.

M is the front of the basket. It may be as ornamental or plain as may be desired. It is formed with the lugs m which extend horizontally from its rear face and are adapted to rest upon the upper face of the front bar of the basket as seen best in Fig. 2, the said lugs being preferably perforated to receive the removable fastenings m which pass into holes in the front bar of the basket as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. It is formed centrally, upon its under side, with the rearwardly-extending latch or lug M which is. adapted to engage the under face of the front bar of the basket as seen in Fig. 2. By this construction the front can be easily and quickly placed in position and firmly held in a true vertical plane and easily removed when necessary.

N is the bottom or crown. It is provided at its upper ends with pintles 'n. as seen in Fig. 1, which are detachably engaged in cars or lugs 12. on the front face of the front, the

said bottom or crown being cutaway as shown at N to provide for the working of the lever K. It is shown as provided with a hole 12. for the reception of a rod or poker whereby it may be turned up into a horizontal position as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 when, by a slight movement toward the right its right hand edge is engaged over the ledge or shoulder 70 of the lever K and there held while the ashes are being removed. A slight movement in the opposite direction will disengage it from the said lever when it will fall to its normal position by its own weight.

Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

No claim is made herein to the construction of the fire basket and grate or the means for operating the same as these will form the subject matter ofa separate application about to be filed.

WVhat we claim as new is- 1. The combination with the fire -place frame having brick-retaining and supporting portions, of a removable clamp piece having a flange to overlap the upper portions of the brick-sections, and removable fastenings for binding said clamp-piece in position, as set forth.

2. The combination with the fire -place frame having brick-retaining and supporting portions, of a removable clamp-piece having a flange to overlap the upper portions of the brick-sections andprovided with apertured lugs, the hood, the removable frame, and removable fastenings for binding the said clamp-piece, hood and frame in position, substantially as specified.

3. The combination with the fire-place frame having horizontal portions and vertical lugs and vertical bars, of the hood, the frame supported on the hood, and the clamp piece having end pieces at an angle thereto and flanges and apertured lugs for detachably fastening in place and removable pins passed through the apertures of the lugs, substantially as specified.

4. The combination with the frame having hood with opening, of the frame over said opening, the clamp piece having flanges and apertured lugs passed through openings in the frame and hood, and fastenings removably engaged in said lugs to hold the frame and clamp piece in position, as set forth.
