' E. KEUSER.
WINDOW APPLIANGE.
No.,528,481. Patented Oot. so, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()F ICE,
EMANUEL KEUSER, oE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MARY KEUSER, OF SAME PLAoE.
WINDOW APPLIANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ?atent No. 528,481, dated October 30,1894.
Application filed May 17, 1894:. Serial No. 511,622. (No model.)
I To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL KEUsER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to that class of window sash arranged so as to be manipulated on pivots to permit of the turning of v the same; and in such connection it relates more particularly to the general construction and arrangement of a window-sash and the provision of the same with means for locking and unlocking the same from traveler rails or strips connected with the sash-frame.
The principal objects of my invention are, first, to provide a simple, durable and effective window-sash arranged so as to be readily manipulated to facilitate cleaning and glazing of the windows thereof and painting of the frame-work of the same as well as to afford thereby ventilation of a room; second, to provide a window-sash pivotally supported to movable rails or strips engaging channels or stiles of the sash frame-work and having a device connected with the sash and adapted to engage each strip or rail of the appliance so as to be readily manipulated to permit of the'locking and unlocking of the sash; and, third, to provide a sash-frame with traveler strips or rails controlled by concealed weighted cords and the respective strips or rails having pivoted thereto the window sash provided with locking devices connected with the sash and adapted to engage means provided in the traveler rails or strips in such manner as to readily lock and unlock one to and from the other.
My invention consists of the improvements in window sash constructed and arranged for operation in substantiallythe manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and scope of myinvention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1, is a vertical section through a window sash and its frame-work embodying gage pins or retaining means provided in the traveler rails or strips controlled by concealed Weighted cords set into the frame-work in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the traveler rail or strip for engaging and traveling in the channeled ways or stiles of the sash framework and having pivoted thereto a sash provided with a locking device as illustrated in Fig. 3, and for manipulating the same to cause engagement of the sash with its traveler rail or strip for locking the same thereto.
Referring to the drawings, A,,is the sash -frame-work of any suitable construction.
A, represents a parting bead and onboth sides thereof are formed ways or stiles a and o for a purpose to be presently more fully explained. I
B and B are traveler rails orstrips adapted to move up and down on each side in the channeled ways or stiles a and a and provided with cords a having weights, not shown, concealed in the frame-work A. These cords a pass over pulleys a j ournaled in brackets a set into the upper parts of the ways or stiles a and a", as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Each of the rails or strips B and B, are provided with slits b and 1), formed in the body thereof and with cross pins or steps b and b to be presently more fully explained.
C and O, are the upper and lowersash pi voted to the traveler rails or strips B and B, at c and 0'. These pivots or pins are preferably set into brass tubes or similar devices, in order to prevent wear of the samein' their connection with the sash and traveler rails or strips, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
d, are oblong slits formed in one or both of the vertical strips of each window sash-frame and engaging therein is a metal strip D, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, with a handle or loop 01', and-having in the body thereof acute angular slits d and (i engaged by cross pins d and d secured into and through the vertical side strips of the sash-frame and near one edge thereof are provided notches or slits d and (1 for engaging the cross-pins b and h of the traveler rails or strips B and B, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4, whereby through a hand manipulation of the said locking device D, of each window sash operated from the bottom of the upper sash and from the top of the lower sash, the said frames can be readily locked to and unlocked from the respective traveler rails or strips 13 and B, to permit in the one instance of a turning of the sash around for various purposes and in the other to hold the sash firmly in a vertical position to said rails or strips B and B.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A window appliance, comprising a frame provided with weighted traveler rails or strips having slits therein and cross-pins, a sash pivoted to said rails or strips and having the side strips thereof provided with slits and pins and a locking device movably engaging the side strips of said sash and having notches for engaging the cross-pins spanning the slits of said rails or strips, substantially as and for the purposes described.
EMANUEL KEUSER.
