WINDOW CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH G. STANECKY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in /Vindow Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in window construction, and has for its object the production of a window which will be of new and improved construction and efficient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
\Vith these objects in view, my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a transverse section of a.windo-w showing the preferred form of construction, and Fig. 2 is a sectional detail of a portion of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustratedin the drawing comprises a window frame 1, which is substantially of ordinary construction. Formed in the inner side of one of the vertical members of frame 1 are grooves 2 which are slidably engaged by corresponding edges of the upper and lower window sashes 3 and 4, respectively, said grooves and the engaging edges of said sashes being preferably of the form shown in Fig. 1 so as to permit of ready horizontal swinging of the opposite edges of said sashes, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Arranged in the elongated chamber 5 of the vertical member of the frame 1, in which are formed the grooves 2, and opposite said grooves are vertically extending channel guide members 6, secured in position at intervals by means of screws or other suitable securing devices. Each of the channel members 6is provided at its bottom with a central longitudinally extending slot 6, which registers with a correspondingly positioned slot 7 formed in the adjacent wall of the window frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the outer sides or ends of the slot 7 opening into the bottoms of said sash grooves 2. Slidably mounted in the channels 6 are blocks 8. Said blocks are provided with curved tubular extensions 29 in which are curved passages 30 which register with the slots 6 and 7. Slidablymounted in the passages 30 are correspondingly curved arms 31 the outer ends of which project through the slots 6 and 7 and being hingedly connected with the respective sashes 3 and 4:, as clearly shown in the drawing. With this construction it will be seen, that upon unlocking of the free edges of the sash, the same may be swung either inwardly or outwardly, the sliding of the member 81 in the case of sash 3 permitting of said sash swinging outwardly and the hinged connection of said sash with. said member 31 permitting of said sash swinging inwardly and vice versa with regard to sash 4:. The inner ends of the arms 31 are provided with an enlargement 82 for engagement with the inner extremities of the tubular extensions 29 so as to prevent disengagement of said arms when the sashes are swung inwardly as mentioned.
Arranged in the chamber 5 of the window frame are counter-balance weights 12 which are connected by means of chains 1 with the blocks 8 cooperating with the sashes 3 and 41, said chains passing over channel pulleys 141 which are mounted at the upper end of,
the chamber 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Weights 12 are slidably mounted upon rigidly secured vertically extending guide bars 15 which are mounted in chamber 5. Said bars are provided to prevent lateral swinging 0f the weights and hence to obviate noise and rattle which is ordinarily incidental to the operation of weights which are freely supported.
The free edges of the sashes 3 and a are releasably locked against horizontal swinging through the medium of suitable locking devices 16 which project outwardly for engagement with elongated vertically extending slots 20 which are provided in the adjacent sides of the frame 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The side of the frame engaging with the free edges of the sashes is so formed, as will be observed, that upon unlocking of the sashes the same will be free for swinging, the sash 3 being permitted to swing outwardly and the sash 4: to swing inwardly. Handles 25 secured upon the inner sides of said sashes are provided to facilitate manual swinging of the latter.
Weather strips 26 are employed, as shown, to insure a tight connection and to exclude lic strips 27 and screws or other suitable the weather. These weather strips are simply strips of resilient material such as rubber which are secured in positlon by metalsecuring devices 28.
A window of the construction set forth will be found to be of great convenience in cleaning the window panes since the window sashes may be swung inwardly in order tov permit of both sides of the window panes being washed fro-m a position within the house. Also both sashes may be swung to open position in order to entirely open the window and thereby to secure thorough ventilation. The construction will be found noiseless in operation and readily operable.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for carrying my invention into effect, these are capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of my invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a window construction, the combination of a frame; a sash mounted in said frame for vertical sliding, one side of said frame being formed with a vertically extending slot; a member slidably mounted in said slot and having a curved opening therein; a curved arm slidably mounted in said opening; and a hinge connection between one end of said arm and said sash, substantially as described.
2. The oombination'with a frame; of a reciprocatory sash. mounted therein; slidable members mounted adjacent to said sash; curved extensions formed on said slidable members; and curved connections secured to said sash and mounted for movement in said extensions. Y
3. The combination with a frame; of a sash mounted to swing and reciprocate therein; slidable members mounted within the body of said frame to one side of said sash; curved extensions formed on said. slid- 5 able members; curved connections secured to said sash and mounted for slidable movement in said extensions; and weights connected to said slidable members.
