Abstract
In a pivotally positioned double hung sash assembly, jamb liners engage and position the sashes. One jamb liner and one vertical edge of the sashes are interconnected for controlled sliding sash movement and a connecting means extends between an edge of the sash and the jamb liner for both the sliding and pivotal sash movement. The connecting means have an arcuate section extending into the jamb liner to engage the same and permit controlled pivotal movement of the sash about the jamb liner. Releasable means are carried on the other edge of the sash for engaging the jamb liner means for fully controlled sliding action of the sash.

[5 7] ABSTRACT In a pivotally positioned double hung sash assembly, jamb liners engage and position the sashes. One jamb liner and one vertical edge of the sashes are interconnected for controlled sliding sash movement and a connecting means extends between an edge of the sash and the jamb liner for both the sliding and pivotal sash movement. The connecting means have an arcuate section extending into the jamb liner to engage the same and permit controlled pivotal movement of the sash about the jamb liner. Releasable means are carried on the other edge of the sash for engaging the jamb liner means for fully controlled sliding action of the sash.
2 Claims, 7 Drawing Figures DOUBLE HUNG PIVOTAL WINDOW BACKGROUND OF INVENTION Double hung window sashes have been provided for many years and it always has been a difficult job to wash the outer surfaces of such windows. Thus various types of pivotally positioned windows have been provided heretofore and one example of the same is shown in prior US. Pat. No. 3,124,850. However, efforts continually are being made for new and improved structures of this type to provide a well positioned slidable double hung window sash that has suitable controlled pivotal action for ready opening of the sash by pivotal action on a vertical axis to expose the outer surface of the window in the sash for cleaning or other purposes.
The general object of the present invention is to provide an improved pivotal double hung window sash construction wherein the sash is characterized by controlled pivotal action through a limited arc.
Another object of the invention is to provide a relatively uncomplicated, permanently positioned control means in a slidable sash assembly for pivotal and sliding movement of the window sash and to provide a low cost, easily assembled and operated pivotal sash unit.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved release means for a slidable window sash to free one vertical edge thereof for pivotal movement about the other edge of the window sash in the window assembly.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention will be made more apparent as the specification proceeds.
Reference now is made to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is an elevation of a double hung sash window frame unit embodying the principles of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged horizontal section of the sash unit of FIG. 1 with the sashes in horizontal overlapped relationship;
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged horizontal section of the releasable edge of a window sash of the structure of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal section like FIG. 3, but with the window sash edge being cleared for release for pivotal movement;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal section of the hinge edge of a window sash of FIG. 1 and the means providing pivotal action in the sash mounting;
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary enlarged elevation of the upper end of the lower sash of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 7 is a fragmentary section on line 77 of FIG. 6 of the upper end of the releasable edge of the lower window sash of the structure of FIG. 1.
When referring to corresponding members shown in the drawings and referred to in the specification, corresponding numerals are used to facilitate comparison therebetween.
SUBJECT MATTER OF INVENTION The invention relates to a double hung sash assembly including a jamb liner, a sash having one vertical edge portion slidably engaging the jamb lilner and means releasably engaging the opposite vertical edge of the sash for sliding sash movement in a vertical plane. The invention comprises the jamb liner including a laterally inwardly open channel section with overhanging flange members thereon, the sash including a laterally out wardly open channel section thereon, and a vertically extending connecting means extends between and engages the channel sections, the connecting means being fixedly engaged with the sash and having an end flanged arcuate section extending into the jamb liner to permit controlled pivotal movement of the sash about the jambliner.
Reference now is particularly made to the details of the construction shown in the accompanying drawings and a double hung sash assembly 10 is indicated as a whole in the drawing. This sash assembly 10 includes frame means 12 and a lower sash l4 and an upper sash 16 operably positioned in the frame means.
As shown in FIG. 2 of the drawings, vertically extending jamb liners 18 and 20 are secured in the frame means 12 with each of these jamb liners including a pair of parallel, laterally inwardly open channel sections 22 and 24 each of which has a pair of overhanging flanges 26 provided at the laterally inner margins thereof. These jamb liners l8 and 20, as well as the sash frame members and the connecting means can be made from any suitable material such as metal, or plastic, and usually the jamb liners, frame members, etc. are formed by extrusion to the exact shapes desired, being cut to suitable lengths for use in forming the sash assembly 10. Preferably the jamb liners l8 and 20 are resiliently engaged with the frame means 12 and any known members or spring devices can be positioned intermediate the laterally outer portions of the jamb liners and the adjacent surfaces of the frame means 12.
In this instance, one or more control units 28 is provided for determining the relationship of the jamb liners to the frame means. The control units include a control bolt 30 having a square nut 32 thereon with the nut engaging a pair of hinge leaves 34 and 36 that press against a resilient pad 38 on the bolt shank 30, and bearing on the jamb liner 18. The inner edge end of the bolt 30 is accessible between the sashes l4 and 16 in a portion 19 of the jamb liner but retained against axial movement thereby so that on rotary movement of the bolt 30, the nut 32 changes its relationship to the hinge leaves 34 and 36 and the pad 38 whereby the angular relationship of the hinge leaves to the jamb liner can be varied to engage the frame 12 and a relatively fixed positioning of the jamb liners in the frame means is obtained. This structure is more fully described in copending application Ser. No. 410,236 filed Oct. 26, 1973. A plurality of these control units 28 can be provided at vertically spaced portions of the sash assembly.
The sashes themselves have vertically extending sash frame members 40 and 42 thereon secured to opposite sides of the window units 44 and 46 provided in the lower sash l4 and the upper sash 16, respectively. Such window or window units 44 and 46 can be of any conventional construction and can be secured to the sash frame members 40 and 42 in any conventional manner. These frame members 40 and 42 each include laterally outwardly open channel shaped sections 48 and 50, respectively, that are positioned immediately adjacent the laterally inwardly open channel sections 22 and 24 provided on the jamb liners. The remaining sash frame means are of any suitable construction.
So as to permit controlled pivotal movement of the sashes in the sash assembly, a vertically directed connecting member 52 is provided for extending between and engaging the adjacent vertically extending channel sections to permit controlled sliding action of the sashes in the sash assembly as well as to provide controlled pivotal movement of the individual sashes about one vertically extending edge thereof. In the particular embodiment of the invention shown herein, the sash frame members 40 have overhanging flanges 54 and 55 on the outer edges of their channel sections and outwardly extending L-shaped flanges 56 and 57 on the laterally inner end of the connecting means or member 52 frictionally or otherwise are secured in the channel 48 to retain the same in engagement with the member 52 whereby the connecting members 52 are fixedly secured to the sashes and will slide therewith or make other unitary movement with the sash.
At the laterally outer portions of these connecting members 52, normally a pair of outwardly directed concentric arcuate sections 58 and 60 are provided with the section 58 being relatively short and terminating in an overhanging end flange 59 while the arcuate section 60 is appreciably longer than its concentric associated section 58 and with such section terminating in an outwardly extending overhanging edge flange 61. The flanges 59 and 61 limit or control the extent of arcuate movement of a sash about the jamb liner 18 by engaging the flanges 26 as shown in the drawings. Usually the flanges 59 and 61 are radially aligned from the center of pivotal movement of the window sash with which they are associated so that such flanges 59 and 61 would simultaneously engage the overhanging flanges 26 on the channel section of the jamb liner to limit the opening or pivotal movement of the associated sash.
The opposite sash frame member 42 of each of the sashes is releasably engaged with its associated jamb liner for controlling sliding action of the sash in the sash frame, but to permit ready release of such vertical edge of the sash for the desired controlled pivotal sash movement. To this end, a vertically extending guide strip 62 is carried by the laterally outer edge of each of the sash frame members 42 and it is retained in engagement therewith by overhanging outwardly directed flanges 64 on the inner ends of such guide strip. Such guide strip is adapted to enter into or between the overhanging flanges 26 on the adjacent channel section 24, as indicated in FIG. 3, and be urged into such operative positions at all time as by means of a resilient block of foam plastic material 66 compressed between the inner surface of the guide strip 62 and the adjacent portion of the sash frame member 42.
In order to control the positions of the guide strips 62 in the assembly, operating fingers or control members 68 are carried by each of the sashes l4 and 16 at the adjacent end portions thereof. Such control members 68 can be made from plastic or other conventional material and they include a control or lever arm 70 and a stubby vertically extending section 72 normally contoured complementary to the inner surface of the guide strip 62 and extending thereinto from the end of the guide strip. The stubby section 72 preferably is secured to the guide strip as by a screw 74 or the like. Hence, when one moves the control arm 70 of the control member 68 through an are, one edge portion, at least, of this control member 68 in the section 72 thereof can be swung out of engagement with the associated channel section or flange 26, FIG. 4, on the jamb liner. Then by drawing or pulling the window sash inwardly of the sash assembly at that time, the guide strip 62 will progressively work or free itself from engagement with the jamb liner 20 and permit the desired pivotal action of the window sash.
Obviously the constructions of the upper and lower sash are substantially the same. However, the control member 68 for the upper sash would be positioned at the lower end of the upper sash and would be available or exposed for action by suitable vertical sliding relationships provided between the two sashes in the window assembly.
In the embodiment of the invention shown, the sashes .14 and 16 are shown to have about 45 of opening movement in the sash assembly. The extent of opening action of the window sashes is controlled by the length of the arcuate sections 58 and 60 on the connecting member in the sash assembly. Any conventional air seal members, sealing strips or the like can be provided in the window assembly to aid in the desirable operation and functioning thereof. Obviously the guide strips 62 can be readily re-engaged with the associated jamb liner 20 by compressing such guide strips laterally inwardly of the sashes when it is desired to re-engage the vertically extending margin of the sash with the jamb liner 20.
Conventional balance means are provided in the sash assembly and are diagrammatically shown in the drawing.
The sash assembly of the invention is made from sturdy materials by conventional means and it is of a practical, efficient construction. The pivotal action in the sashes is readily obtained when desired, but otherwise the sashes will remain in double hung operative positions for normal use. The apparatus is substantially maintenance free and will provide a long service life. Hence, it is believed that the objects of. the invention have been achieved.
While one complete embodiment of the invention has been disclosed herein, it will be appreciated that modification of this particular embodiment of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the invention.
We claim:
1. In a pivotally positioned double hung sash assembly including a jamb liner, a-sash having one vertical edge portion slidablyor operably engaging the jamb liner and means releasably engaging the opposite vertical edge of said sash for sliding movement, the improvement comprising said jamb liner including a laterally inwardly open channel section with overhanging flange members thereon, said sash including a laterally outwardly open channel section thereon with overhanging flange members thereon, a vertically extending connecting means extending between and engaging said channel sections for sliding movement of said sash in said jamb liner, said connecting means fixedly engaging said sash and having end flanged arcuate sections extending into said jamb liner to permit pivotal movement of said sash about said jamb liner, a second jamb liner for the opposite vertical edge of said sash, a resiliently positioned laterally movable guide strip protruding laterally from and carried by said sash to engage the second jamb liner, and a control means fixedly engaging an end portion of said guide strip and extending beyond an end of the sash whereby the control means can be twisted on a vertical axis to free the end portion of said guide strip from the second jamb liner and the remainder of said guide strip can be pogressively disengaged from such second jamb liner. 7
2. In a pivotally positioned double hung sash assembly including a jamb liner, a sash having one vertical edge portion slidably or operably engaging the jamb liner and means releasably engaging the opposite vertical edge of said sash for sliding movement, the improvement comprising said jamb liner including a laterally inwardly open channel section with overhanging flange members thereon, said sash including a laterally outwardly open channel section thereon with overhanging flange members thereon, and a vertically extending connecting means extending between and engaging said channel sections for sliding movement of said sash in said jamb liner, said connecting means fixedly engaging said sash and having a pair of concentric arcuate sections extending into said jamb liner to permit pivotal movement of said sash about said jamb liner, said arcuate sections operatively engaging said flange members of said jamb liner to control both sliding and arcuate movement of said sash on said jamb liner, one of said arcuate sections being longer in arcuate length than the second arcuate section, and
a second jamb liner for the opposite vertical edge of said sash, a resiliently positioned laterally movable guide strip protruding laterally from and carried by said sash to engage the second jamb liner, and a control means fixedly engages an end portion of said guide strip and extends beyond an end of the sash whereby the control means can be twisted on a vertical axis to free the end portion of said guide strip from the second jamb liner and the remainder of said guide strip can be progressively disengaged from such second jamb liner.
Claims (2)
1. In a pivotally positioned double hung sash assembly including a jamb liner, a sash having one vertical edge portion slidably or operably engaging the jamb liner and means releasably engaging the opposite vertical edge of said sash for sliding movement, the improvement comprising said jamb liner including a laterally inwardly open channel section with overhanging flange members thereon, said sash including a laterally outwardly open channel section thereon with overhanging flange members thereon, a vertically extending connecting means extending between and engaging said channel sections for sliding movement of said sash in said jamb liner, said connecting means fixedly engaging said sash and having end flanged arcuate sections extending into said jamb liner to permit pivotal movement of said sash about said jamb liner, a second jamb liner for the opposite vertical edge of said sash, a resiliently positioned laterally movable guide strip protruding laterally from and carried by said sash to engage the second jamb liner, and a control means fixedly engaging an end portion of said guide strip and extending beyond an end of the sash whereby the control means can be twisted on a vertical axis to free the end portion of said guide strip from the second jamb liner and the remainder of said guide strip can be pogressively disengaged from such second jamb liner.
2. In a pivotally positioned double hung sash assembly including a jamb liner, a sash having one vertical edge portion slidably or operably engaging the jamb liner and means releasably engaging the opposite vertical edge of said sash for sliding movement, the improvement comprising said jamb liner including a laterally inwardly open channel section with overhanging flange members thereon, said sash including a laterally outwardly open channel section thereon with overhanging flange members thereon, and a vertically extending connecting means extending between and engaging said channel sections for sliding movement of said sash in said jamb liner, said connecting means fixedly engaging said sash and having a pair of concentric arcuate sections extending into said jamb liner to permit pivotal movement of said sash about said jamb liner, said arcuate sections operatively engaging said flange members of said jamb liner to control both sliding and arcuate movement of said sash on said jamb liner, one of said arcuate sections being longer in arcuate length than the second arcuate section, and a second jamb liner for the opposite vertical edge of said sash, a resiliently positioned laterally movable guide strip protruding laterally from and carried by said sash to engage the second jamb liner, and a control means fixedly engages an end portion of said guide strip and extends beyond an end of the sash whereby the control means can be twisted on a vertical axis to free the end portion of said guide strip from the second jamb liner and the remainder of said guide strip can be progressively disengaged from such second jamb liner.
