Beit known that I, THOMAS GASKINS, of

. Arcadia, in the county of De Soto and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Seals,'of which the following is a specication.

My invention is an improved car seal and has for an object to provide a simple, eco-1 y the hinged front tiirned down. Fig. lis a vertical section and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the seal.

The seal comprises a box A, slide B and bar C. In practice the bar C is secured either to one side of the car or if double doors are used to one door and the box A to the other door, but manifestly in single doors the box may be secured to the car side and the bar to the door.

The bar is preferably secured by a chain as shown to give it play while the box may be bolted or screwed fast to place. This bar is adapted to be locked in the box A by the slide B and to such end I prefer to form the barl with a hook like end C as shown.

The box is formed with a xed or mai'n'section A and a movable section A2 the latter preferably forming the front and hinged at one edge a2 so it may be opened and closed after the fashion of a door and I shall refer and the button set to retain it until the slide .is ,inserted when the button may be adjusted to release the marker to bear against the slide.

The sections A A2 have portions'which interlock with the slide B and prevent the opening of door section A2 when the slide is in place in the box. These interlocking portions are preferably headed studs D and E projecting respectively from the sections A and A2 and entering undercut grooves d and e in the opposite sides of the slide.

The slide C has strips F forming a card holder and the door section has a glass covered sight opening so the card upon the slide a shed for the box and makes the same rain and snow proof.

In practice the hook bar is put in the box with its hook resting against one side thereof the door sections closed and the slide slipped down, its edge being cut away to tit the hook of the bar C. Now it will be seen that the slide locks the hook bar in the box and the interlocking portions of sections A and A2 and slidehold the door section closed so that the hook bar and box are locked together until the slide is removed. This may be readily done but detection is assured by the devices which I will now describe.

The section A2 is provided on its inner side near its top or above its sight opening with a marker H which operates as the slide is withdrawn to form a mark across the card and so indicate to the inspector or others that the seal has been opened. As shown and preferred this marker H is a spring plate h fixed at one end to the section A2, and springing at its other end toward the slide and bearing at such end the marker which may be a pad of sponge, cotton, cloth or thelike saturated with a marking paint as for instance some non-` drying oil and lamp black,vor other forms of marking devices may be employed. To hold l this marker back so it will not cancel the card as the slide is inserted, I provide a restraining device I preferably a turn button z' having its shaft extended through the section A2 and providedwith a knob or handle fi.

The marker may be depressed by the hand While the construction shown is preferred it is manifest that the card might be secured to the box vand the marker to the slide without ldeparting from some ofthe broad principles of my invention.

After the seal is applied the only cost is the slight one of cards. It saves time to the agent as he only has to insert the card and adjust the seal parts and the car inspector can IOO see at a glance, at night by the flash of his lantern whether the seal has been tampered with.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A seal box having a movable section a slide fitted to said box, interlocking devices between the box'sections and the slide whereby when the latter is inserted it will hold the sections of the box closed and a marker substantially as set forth.

2. A seal box having a main and a mov# able section the slide fitted to said box and adapted to hold its sections closed when inserted, one of said parts the box and slide, having a card receiver, and the other part having a marker substantially as set forth.

3. The combination in a car seal of the box having its door section provided with a sight opening and provided above the said opening with a marker a restraining device by which to restrain and release said marker and the slide having the card receiver and constructed to interlock with the box sections and secure the same closed when inserted in the box substantially as set forth.

7. The combination of the box having a movable section, a slide fitted to said box, interlocking devices between the box sections and the slide and the bar held in said box substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
