CARLOS CAMPANILE, 0F ENSENADA, ARGENTINA.
PADLOCK.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 1921.
Applicationled April 28, 1921. Serial No. 465,109.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, CARLOS CAMPANILE, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Ensenada, Province of Buenos Aires, Ar-
5 gentina, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of'which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lan improved padlock with'a device for detecting and indicating when the same has been opened,
and Vhas for-one of its objects the provisionv of a padlock equipped with a looking device SocOmbined that when operated to unlock Y yoropen the same, a card placed within the padlock will be torn, the card being so larthe padlock has been opened.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a padlock of the above kind, 'provided with sight-opening,vwhich may be in the form of a window, and a cover, whereby the card may be inspected without the necessity of opening the padlock.
rIhe padlock according to this invention may be of any suitableitypeas regards the `locking mechanism, and either one end of the .key itself or a separate vpiece operated 4by the same may be employed to operate the' An essential feature yofthe invention conl sistsin a particular piece operated by the key and arranged to slide -within a guide, said piece being provided with one or more projections adapted -to enter into holes formed for that purpose in a. card placed within the padlock. Besides, the usual'bolt which at one end engages in a recess formed at the'end ofthe shackle of the padlock, isy
operated by the aforesaid piece.
In the preferred embodimenti'the `card is secured in position bymeans of afhinged cover', locked at one of itsV sides by the shackle of the 'padlock when in 4its closed position, the lock card will be torn.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood Vand carried into :practice withoutdiiiiculty, a preferred embodiment ofthe samev has been Shown in the accompanying fillustrative drawings, wherein:-V
" Fgure'l is a `perspective view of the padsofthatin order to remove the card, c will first Ihave vto be opened, whileby such opening or Vunlocking operation the lock with its cover or lid raised and without a card. f
Fig. 2 is an elevation of a card.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the closed padlock, with the cover andcard removed.
F 1g. 4 illustrates a longitudinal section of the same, in its locked position.
'Fig'. gis a. side view, with the cover and window 1n open position.
Fig. is a sectional view, illustrating the mechanism of the lock-as seen from the rear.
Fig. 7 shows a cross sectional view, the card having been torn.
jFlg. 8 is a perspective view ysimilar to Fig. 1 of a modified construction in which the key is inserted at the front part of the lock, instead of through the bottom.
Fig. 9 isa longitudinal section, similar to Fig. 4, of said modification.
ing bolt 2, slidably mounted in a guide 3.
The bolt 2 tends to constantly remain in its locked position under thel action of the spring 4 and has its locking end engaged in a notch or recess 5, formed at the end of the shackle 6 of the padlock. The shackle 6 is mounted to move on a pin 7 secured in thevcasing l.; and to insure freedom of move-y mentand proper accommodation of the free end of the shackle to the body of the lock, the opening in the shackle for the pin 7 is in the form of an elongated slot 8.
The key 9 for the lock may be arranged to directly operate the locking mechanism, as in the case of the form shown in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, wherein the key passes through the ward device 10, being provided with a projection 11 -for that purpose.
In' theV modified construction shown in Figs. 8 and 9,'i`n which the key 9 is insertedthrough the front side, said key acts on a sleeve 10a inthe ward device which in turn by means of a suitable projection l2 operates the locking mechanism.
' When'turning the key to open the lock, the tooth'or projection 1l or 12, according to the case, will cause the horizontal displacement of an operating member :13 along a closure plate 20 formed with a guide slot 14 in which slide two projections 15, secured to said operating member. A spring 16 tends to hold said operating member in its position of rest. After performing acertain part of itstravel, an arm 13;l on the'` member 13 strikes against an arm 2 of the bolt and pushes the same along, against the action of the spring 4, whereby the bolt is disengaged from the recess in the shackle. This operation permits the opening of the padlock which will be facilitated by the action exerted by the spring 17 which is secured to the guide 3 and bears against the shackle end.`
The card 18 is provided with two holes 19 of suitable shape so as to exactly lit the two projections of the member in its position of rest, and is placed in the padlock in flat condition on the plate 20 which closes the compartment containing the locking mechanism. After the card is positioned,
a frame 21 is brought to bear upon the card,
this frame v21 being hinged at 22 to the base of the casing 1 and provided at its opposite side with a laterally bent flange or extended portion 23, having .anv opening 24 through which enters the free end of shackle 6 and also having a cut away part 25 for the reception of a nose formed on the pivoted end of said shackle.
With the parts of the padlock in 'their locked position, the shackle 6 will prevent the frame 21 from being opened, so that it will be impossible to remove the card without first unlocking the padlock The frame 21 may be provided with a suitable sight-opening preferably closed by a glass 26, in order to be able tofsee whether the card has or. has not been torn, without'.
the necessity of opening the padlock. For the protection of said glass, a suitable cover 27 is secured by means of ahinge at`27, at
Y invention will be readily understood; TheV one side of the frame 21 and a spring 28 is provided to normally keep the cover in its closed position. The cover 27 is formed with vlaT-projection 29 Vto facilitate the opening thereof. If
desired, the cover may also be provided with a suitable fastening pin, adapted to be inserted into the easing and Aengage in a recess formed in the part 13 in such a way that by a slight movement of Ythe key it may be released. i Y l From the foregoing description, the lop-1 eration of the padlock accordingvto this card being provided with a signature or other means of definite identification and itsv removal from the padlock only being possible after the latter its proper key, it will one can at any time determine whether the padlock has been opened and if such opening has been effected by the persons possessing the` key. 1 i
has been opened byA at once be seen thatV It will be evident that several modifications ofconstruction and .detail may be in.VV
troduced without departing vfrom the scope of this invention, as clearly defined in the vclaims hereto annexed.L Y
