To all whom it may concern:
1 Be it known that '1, ROBERT RICHARDSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyless Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
. This invention relates generally to looks and particularly to keyless padlocks, having for its primary object to provide a lock of the character stated which is of simple and improved construction, which involves but few movable or separable parts, the said parts being so constructed and arranged as to minimize the opportunity for wear, breakage or derangement,which may be quickly and easily assembled, and which may be manufactured at exceedingly low cost.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock of the character stated which has its operating mechanism so concealed as to be difiicult of manipulation by anyone unfamiliar with the same, but which may be readily opened by those havingknowh edge of the construction and principle of operation.
With these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 4 indicates the lock casing, preferably of rectangular shape and open at one side. The open side of the casing is closed by a plate co-extensive with the casing. The ends andcbottom of the casing are closed by flanges 6 formed integral with the casing 4L, and against which the inner face of the cover plate 5 engages, while the top of the casing is closed by a flange 7 projecting at right angles to the plate 5 at the upper end thereof.

The shackle for the lock, which comprises the U-shaped bar 8, 1s pivoted at one end as at 9 within the casing and at one corner thereof, whlle the free end of the shackle 1s adapted to enter the casin at the end of the latter opposite to the pomt of connecin closed or looking position comprises a spring indicated at 11. This spring, which consists of an elongated thin flat bar, is curved intermediate its ends to form a loop 12 which fits around a stud or rivet 13 extending through the casing near the lower end thereof and connecting the cover plate One end of the spring then extends toward the center of the casing and rests upon a stud 14 extending through the casing. The opposite end of the spring extends upwardly from the portion 12 and near one edge of the casing. The free end of this part of the spring is bent forwardly at right angles to provide a catch member 15for engagement within the notch 10 in the free end of the shackle.
The casing 4 has arranged therein directly beneath the free end of the shackle 8 when the latter is closed, an elongated slot 16 disposed parallel to the catch portion 15 on the spring. This slot accommodates one end of a rivet or stud 17, and the inner extremity of this stud is secured to the free or movable end of the catch spring. It is obvious, therefore, that the catch 15 may be withdrawn from engagement within the notch 10 by sliding thespring rearwardly through the instrumentality of the stud 17. The outer end of stud 17 is provided with a head 18, sufliciently large to at all times cover the slot 16. The plate 5 is provided with a head 19 in direct alinement with the stud 17 the particular construction making it appear that the stud 17 extends entirely through the casing.
The casing is provided, in addition to the above studs, with a stud 20 near the lower corner thereof and opposite to the stud 13. It is preferred that the heads of studs 9- 2013, as well as the heads 1918, be of the same size. The heads of the central stud 20 may also be of such size but in the present instance, it is shown a trifle larger. To confuse unauthorized persons tampering with the lock, a series of combination numbers maybe arranged around the central stud 14 and the said stud may be rotatably mounted in the casing.
The movable end of the spring 11, by reason of its resiliency, maintains the catch end 15 thereof in the path of travel of the free end of shackle 8-. It is obvious, therefore,-
that When the shackle is swung to closed position, the catch will snap Within the notch. The shackle will then be held against outward movement but may be readily released by moving the stud 17 Within the slot 16 until the catch member 15 is disengaged from Within the shackle notch;
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to What may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, mate'- rials, dimensions, etc, as may prove expedient and fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is t In a lock of the character described, the combination of a casing, a shackle pivotally connected to said casing and having a catch portion therein, a spring formed from a resilient strip of material and being bent intermediate its ends to form a closed loop, a
stud carried by said casing, said loop fitting about said stud, said spring having one end thereof bentin of a circle and extending away from said loop, said casing also having another stud, said bent portion of said spring resting upon said last mentioned stud for urging the springin one direction, the remaining end portion of said spring being bent at its extreme end for forming a catch, said casing having a slot therein; a bifurcated stud extending through said slot and engaging the last mentioned end portion of said spring. adj acent the catch thereof, a head carried on said stud and covering said slot whereby said last mentioned stud may be freely shifted to spring the last mentioned end portion of said spring rearwardly to cause the catch thereof to release the shackle Whereu on the spring will pivot slightly around t e first mentioned stud to be slightly compressed whereby when the sprine is again released it will return to its normal position to cause the catch thereof to be in the path of movement of the shackle when the same is moved into said casing.
