Description
(No Model.) H. L. R WOLF. BUCKET FASTENER.
- Patented Oct. 30, 1894'.
951p 61mm,
UNITED STATE PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY L. RUDOLPH WOLF, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
BUCKET-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of, Letters Patent No. 528,316, dated Oc o 1894- Application filed August 10, 1894. $eria1 No. 519,943. (Il'o model.)
ers, of which the following is a specification,
reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in paper box fasteners designed especially for oysters, but applicable to other uses.
The box illustrated in the accompanying drawings is substantially the same as that set forth and shown in Letters Patent granted to me January 15, 1889, and numbered 396,131.
The present invention is an improvement in the lid or top of that box in combination with a fastener, and also an improvement in the fastener as to the manner in which it is applied and held to the box.
In the accompanying drawings on which like reference letters indicate corresponding parts: Figure 1, represents a perspective view of the box with my improvements applied thereto with the lids or covers open; Fig. 2, a similar view with those parts closed; and Fig. 3, a sectional view of a portion of the box showing the manner of attaching the fastener to the box.
The letter A designates a paper box constructed according to my Letters Patent above mentioned, except that to the lids or covers B, C, I have applied a reinforcing board or plate D, preferably made of paste board and held to the lids or covers by some adhesive material, or otherwise held.
Boxes constructed under said Letters Patent have the portion E of their sides formed of two thicknesses of the paper, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3, by the letters a and b. In the space between these thicknesses I place a metallic strip or fastener F, while at c I perforate the outer thickness at in the form of a slot so that the fastener may project through it and above it. The lower end of the fastener is perforated to receive'a securing means which, preferably, consists of the bail or handle G, which passes through the several thicknesses of the side of the box and through the fastener F, the inner end of the bail being bent over or clinched to prevent accidental withdrawal, as shown at d.
Thus the fastener is securely held and is hidden except as to the portion which projects above. When the lids are closed it will be seen that they overlap one another and on the upper one I fold down the fasteners F. Thus both lids are held while the reinforcing plates or pieces D so stiffen the lids that they cannot bend or crumple and thus escape from the fasteners or become partially opened.
While I have described and shown my present improvement in connection with a box constructed in accordance with my said former patent, it is still to be understood that the box may be otherwise constructed and these improvements still be equally applicable. Also, while I have used the word box herein, it will be understood that if the fastener be used on or combined with a recep- I tacle of. any kind other than a specific box, it would still be within the meaning of this specification.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a box fastener, the combination with the box proper a portion of which is of more than one thickness, with an intervening space, and having a transverse perforation through such thicknesses, and a slot through one of them, of a strip of material fitting within said space and projecting through said slot and being perforated, and a device which passes through said thicknesses and said strip to hold the latter, the strip being pliable so as to be bent.
2. In a box fastener, the combination with the box proper, having its sides formed with at least two thicknesses each, and provided with transverse perforations and a slot in one thickness at each side, of a strip fitting between the thicknesses at each side and extending through said slot at each side, and a bail whose ends are passed through said perfora tions and strips, and bent to prevent withdrawal, the strips being pliable.
3. In a box fastener, the combination with [O0 a. box having sides of at least two thicknesses a bail passing through the thicknesses and each and provided with transverse perforathe strips and bent to prevent withdrawal. to tions, and a slot through one thickness, and In testimony whereof I affix my signature in having lids which are reinforced by a stiffenpresence of two Witnesses.
5 ing piece adapted to overlap one another, of HENRY L. RUDOLPH XVOLF.
strips fitted between the thicknesses at either Witnesses: side and extending through said slots and HARLOW E. SPRING,
adapted to fold down upon the upper lid, and .TAS. R. RANDALL.
