Description
-NITE 'STATES PATENT FFIG@ EUGENE I. BLOUNT, OF GARDNER, ASSIGNOR T THE BLONT' M'ANUF'A- 1 TURING OOMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSAOHUSETTS.
SASH-FASTENER. f
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent N0; 527,586, dated Octobef 16, 1894.
Application filed June 14, 1894.
50 all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE I. BLOUNT, of 'Gardner, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented eertain new 5 and useful I'mprovemenlzs in Window-Sash the sashes of a window together after they have bee11 fastened, in order tokeep out 001d, and also to prevent liability of housebreakers tampering with the fastening. T0 these ends the invention oo'nsists in a sash fastener comprising in its consbrctio n a standard. attaehable to the upper sash} a bracket or support attaohablato the lower sash and provided with a cateh adapted t0 engage Bald standard and alocking lever pivoted to the Standard side of the fastener and adapted to swing across and eatch and thereby prevent the latter from being retraeted 01' .disengaged from the standard.
The invention also consists in a sash fastener comprising in its eonstruetion a member composed of a notched standard attachable t0 the upper sash, and a loeking lever pivoted thereto, and a member attachable to tl1e lower sash, and provided with a movable catch adapted to engage said standard, and with an eecentric beari1ig adapted to co-0perate with the said lever, said lever being adapted to press the sasl1es elosely together;
The invention also consists in other improvements incidental to the foregoing, all as is hereinafter described in d etail, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. Of the accompanying drawings which form' part 0f this specifieationligure l is a side view of my improved sash fastener and asectional view of the rneeting rails to which it is applied, tl1e fastener being shown in its locked Serial N0. 514.497. (N0 mode1.)
position. Fig. 2 is a view somewhatsimilar to Fig. l,'showing the fastener in its unlocked position. Fig. 3 is a front elevation the-locking lever being raised. Fig. 4: is a rear eleva-. tion, the lockinglever being also raised. Flg. 5 is a rear elevation, the locking lever being depressed. Fig. 6 is a seetion on line 66 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is aview showing the window as slightly open.
In earrying out my invention I provide a standard, a, having a suitably formed base, a, by means of which it may be attaehed 120 the meeting-rail, b, 0f the upp6r sash of a window. The said standard is provided with one 01 more no tches 012 recesses, a, formed to' eugage a hook o.r cateh, cwhich is pivoted at c to a bracket or other suitable support, d, eonnected With the lower sa sh.
- As herein shown the bracket,d, is eomposed 0f two ears and a supporting base, the eatch .being bivoted 120 the upper portions of the ears aud provided with lateral projeetions, o wliieh afford oonvenient means for manipu- 1ating tl1e catch to unlatch the window, and also for limiting the inward swinging movement of the latter, said projections bearing against the ears 0f the braeke't when tl1e catch is in position to engage the notches of tl1e standard. The eateh is also -provided with a Spur, h, which is adapted t0 engage a crossbar, d, on the bracket, d, when the catch is fully raised 0x thrown back, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and so prevent the eateh from swinglng over into position where lt; might collide with the upper sash. When' the v lower sash is belng moved downwardly in the aet of closing the window, the eatch swings outwardly when it meets the standard and then swings inwardly by gravitation into engagement with one of tl1e notches, a thus loeking the window, the arrangement being such that neither sash can be moved when the eateh is engaged. with a noteh in the standard.
ver bear on the eccentric sides of the bracket ears, and cause a movement of the meeting rails toward each other. The arms, 2 2, of the 1ever are resilient and are provided ab their 1ower ends with projections or teeth, 3 3,which are formed t0 spring into corresponding recesses, 4= 4, in the standard, a, when the lever is raised, so that the 1ever is prevented by the resilienee of its arms from swinging over a0- eidentally when its use is not desired.
When it is desired 130 raise the lower sash 01' lower the upper sash, the locking lever, 7c,
will be raised, as shown in Fig. 2, and the catch will bethrown back to the dottedline position of the seid figure, when the lower sash n1& be raisedor the upper sash may be 10W- ere If ic should be desired to s1ightly raisethe lower sash for the purpose of ventilation, the catch may be .engaged with a notch in the standard, a, above the lowermost notch, as shown in Fig. 7i11 which case the lower .sash will be he1d against being raised, and the upper sash cannot be pus'hed down.
Itwi1l be seen that thelocking lever, when swung over the catch c, prevents said catc'h from being retracted or disengaged from the notched standard.
Ha ving thus expla-ined. the nature .0f my invention and escribed a. way of constructing and using the same, thougfh withoutattempting toset f0113h all 0f the forms in whieh it may be made 01 a11of the modes 0f its use, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1S
l. A sash fastener eomprising in its coustruction a standaxd attachable 120 the upper sash, a bracket 01 support attachable to the lower sash and provided with a, vertically swingi-ng catch adapted to automatically engage said standard, and a vertically swinging locking lever pivoted 1:0 the standard side of the fastener and adapted to swing aeross said eateh, as set forth.
2. A sash fastener comprising in its coustruction a member composed of a. notched. standard attaehableio the upper sash and a locking lever pivoted thereto, and a member attachable to the lower sash and provided with a movable ca-tch adapted to engage said standard, a.-nd with an eccentrie bearing adapted t0 co-operate with the said locking lever, aus sei; fortb. q
3. A sa-sh fastener comprising in its coustruct-ion a notched standard adapted 1:0 be attaehed to the uppersash, and an open locking lever pi-voted t0 said standard, and having resilient sides formed to eo-operate with the standard in holding the 'levet in a raised position, and a. bracket 01' support adapted to be attached 1:0 the lower sa.sh anc1 formed 130 co-pemte with said lever in -pressi-ng the meeting rails together, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presenee of two subscribing witnesses, this 12th day of June, A. D. 1894.
' EUGENE I. BLOUNT.
