FIRE-PLACE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 52,735, dated February 20, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN MooN, of Bethlehem, in the county of Hamilton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and improved mode of using wood or coal as a fuel in fireplaces and regulating the heat most effectually and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view, of which 1 1 are the stiles or uprights, 2 the sliding front, 3 the side jan1bs,4front cross-piece, 6 the back piece of the regulator, 7 the throatvalve. 8 8 are the weights, 9 the grate, 10 the extra back, and 11 the closingfront or fireboard. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 represent sections.
The nature of my invention consists in the improvement, in fire-places, in burning wood or coal, which object I accomplish by constructing two stiles, l 1, with grooves for the sliding front 2 to slide up or down in, and placing the ends of the front cross'piece, 4, firmly to these stiles by means of screws.
These stiles are also provided with grooves for the weights 8 8 to play in, as shown on Fig. 2. These weights are attached to the sides of the sliding front2 by means of chains, and work over pulleys in such a manner as to raise or lower this front as required, increasing or decreasing the draft. Attached to the rear of these stiles l l are also the sides 3 3 of the regulator with its throat-valve 7. The grate 9 is placed into the fire-place, and the extra back 10 rests in this grate 9 with one end and with the other on the back piece of the regulator.
In burning Wood the grate 9 and extra back 10 are dispensed with, and the draft is regulated by opening or closing the throat-valve 7 by means of a small single hook which works into a small eye near the top of the valve 7, drawing it forward or pushing it backward, as the case may be, and raising or lowering the sliding front 2.
In burning coal the grate 9 is'used, and the extra back 10 acts as aregulator for the amount of coal which is to be used. By placing this extra back farther back into the grate a larger amount of coal can be placed upon the grate, and by placing it nearer to the front a smaller quantity is used. If the throat valve 7 is opened and the sliding front 2 is let down, the
draft is increased, and if reversed the draft is decreased. By drawing the grate farther out into the room and letting the sliding front 2 down more of the heat from the coal is kept in the room, while the draft draws out the smoke; and if the room gets too warm the erating substantially as set forth and de-' scribed, for the purpose aforesaid.
