FUSE GAPPBR.
No. 527,132. Patented Oct. 9, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATE T ()FFICE.
GEORGE A. TEEL, OF NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
FUSE-CAPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,132, dated October 9, 1894.
Application filed'November 1, 1893. Serial No. 431L729. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A.'lEnL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newport Beach, in the county of Orange and State .of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuse-Gappers; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhichitappertains to make and 'use the same.
. perfect case and facility.
With thcseand other objects in view, the
invention consists of the construction and arrangement of. the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view often implement, embodying the inven tion. Fig. 2 is a central, longitudinal, vertical section.
Similar n umerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.- p
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 designate the jaws which are formed with central'heads 3, properly mortised and shoulderedtobe fitted into each other and removably attached by a screw 4. Extending rearwardly from each of the heads 3, is a rein or handle 5, and adjacent to the said heads 3, the reins or handles. are formed with semicircular grooves 6, extending in a transverse direction and forming a fuse resizer. Extending forwardly from each'of the heads 3, is a jaw 7, each of which'is supplied with an en-' larged outer end 8 having a vertical opening 9, which is screw-threaded toreceive a screwthreaded crimping plug 10, having its fpee jaw is concaved as at 13 throughout the length of the enlargement S, and at the front is formed with a dove-tailed slot 14, in .which is mounted a similarly formed plate 15, having an outer serrated surface 16, and an inner concave edge 17, which is slight] y bevel'ed to form a biting edge. Adjustably mounted on the plates 15 are slides 18, which are slotted as at 19, andare adjustably held in place by set screws 20, the inner faces of the said slides being serrated to engage the serrated surfaces of the said plates 15. By adjusting these slides the outer crimp may be regulated as will be readily understood. Secured in connection with one of the jaws 7 isarubber block 21, which forms agagc for the cap and is held by the adjusting screw22. By the use of this rnbberblock the water proof crimp is caused tocome in the right place, and the yielding nature of the block-insures absolute, safety from an explosion of the said cap.
The heads 3 at one side are formed with notches or openings 23, adjacent to which and projecting slightly thereover, are cutters 24, which are removably held in position by 'screws' 25, so that they can be readily disconnected, and sharpened when desired. In the opposite edges of the heads 3 are also located transverse openings 27, which are supplied withcutters' 28, and are used to cut the fuse into lengths, or trim the same, while the opposite cutters are adapted to be used in making a partial longitudinal out which is frequently necessary in the operation of arranging fuses and caps. It will be seen. that the screw-posts in the outer ends of the jaws 7 are adjustable to regulate ditferen-tsizes of crimps and to accommodate various dimen sions of caps.
The device as constructed and arranged is especially intended for thenise of miners, but it may be employed for other purposes; The crimping jaws are of steel and have two different crimps with one motion of the hand. One crimp is for the purpose of securing the cap to the fuse, and thesecond crimp is to make it absolutely water proof.
, It isobviously apparent that'many minor changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts might'be made and substituted for those-shown and described, with- 2. In an implement. of the character set forth, the combination ofza pair of jaws hav-.
ing heads with cutters thereon, and handles with fuse resizing recesses adapted to relatively. co-act, grooves in the outer ends of said jaws, screw-posts adj ustabl'y mounted in said jaws,,and having inner reduced ends with concave grooves therein, outer dove-tail plates with serrated surfaces and slides adjustably mounted on' said serrated plates, substan-' tially as described.
3. Ina-an implement of the character. described, a combination of a pair of jaws made concave in their inner edges, crimping plugs having their inner ends formed with a concave and extended intJ the said concave edges of the jaws and adjustable relative to thelatter, and slides relatively adjustable on the'ends of the jaws substantiallyas described for the purpose specified.
4. In an implement of the character described, the-combination of a pair of jaws,
made concave in thelr inner edges, crimping -plngs having their inner ends formed to a concave and extending into the said concave edges of the jaws, and adjustable relative to the latter, plates held in dovetail grooves in the ends of the jaws and serrated on their outer ends, slides adjustable on. the said plates, and having their inner faces serrated, and means for holding the said slides in the adjusted position, substantially as described.
' In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE A. TEEL.
