SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,816, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed July 24,1884: (NolnodeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE HOEFER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ghampoeg, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal-Outting Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appe'rtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in devices for holding metal while being cut, the object of my invention being to provide an implement which may be employed for trimming and holding sheet-metal plates; and to this end my invention consists in an attachment for anvils or other such structures having a solid foundation, whichattachment consists in a spring or bar which has a portion doubled upon itself, a block against which the free end of the spring abuts, a screw for regulating the distance between the end of the spring and the upper surface of the block, and a gage, and means for holding the block and spring in position, as will be hereinafter set forth.
My invention also consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a side View, Fig. 2 a sectional view, Fig. 3 a vertical sectional view, Fig. 4 a perspective view, of an implement which is employed in connection with the holder for trimming the metal.
A represents the base, which is adapted to be attached to an anvil or other solid foundation, and is for this purpose provided with a transverse groove, a. One end of this base A is provided with a vertical opening, B, which has an inclined side, I), and is adapted to receive and retain the bent portion of the spring, the base portion of a block, and a wedge for retaining these parts within the opening B, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
0 represents the base of a holding spring,
therewith, the portion 0 being curved upbent outwardly and extends beyond the end of the portion 0. This spring is formed of a single piece of metal of suitable thickness, and
is tempered and bent so that its ends will have a tendency to bear upon or toward each other.
The spring hereinbefore described is provided, adjacent to its curved portion 0, with a screw-threaded perforation, c, for the reception of an adjusting-screw, D, the lower end of which fits within a threaded recess, a, formedimmediately under the threaded perforation c. I the position of the portion 0 of the spring relative to the block may be varied to accommodate different thicknesses of metal.
E represents a block or anvil,which is provided upon opposite sides with shoulders. This anvil is secured in the opening B immediately under the end of the spring by a wedge, F, which wedge holds the spring and block within the opening B.
A sliding or adjustable gage, G, is retained in position upon the straight portion or base 0 of the spring by means of an adjustingscrew, H, which passes through a bifurcated port-ion of the gage into a screw-threaded opening in the spring, as shown. The gage G has one end of the same bent upward at right angles, and may be provided, when desired, with a central nib or projection, g,when the gage is intended to be used and the implement employed for cutting circular sheetmetal plates.
The end of the spring-holder G has one corner rounded, while the opposite corner is formed so as to present a right angle, and the edges of the block E are similarly constructed. In Fig. 4 I have shown a hammer having a cutting-face, I, which is adapted to be employed with my improvedimplement, the cutting-edge of this hammer being wedge-shaped and curved, as shown.
The operation of my invention is as follows:

When it is desired to cut circular plates of metal, the gage having the central nib, :g, is
employed, and the metal is turned upon said point. By the means hereinbefore described I am enabled to provide an implement or device which is simple in construction and effcctive in operation, and a labor-saving 'de- 1 vice.
One of the uses to which my invention may be put is the cutting of sheet-metal strips whi h are employed for securing the tops upon wooden packages-as butter-firkins, 82:0.- and the cutting of circular metai plates for covering the bung-holes of barrels or 'c'ask's.
Though I have mentioned these uses, it is ev'ident that my invention may be 'employedffor numerous other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, Nvhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. A holder for sheet metal'adapted'to employed in connection with the'cutti'ng means, consisting of a block or anvil and aspring and spring-holder secured to a common base, so that the end of the spring-holder will lie immediately above the outer face of the anvil, and a regulating-screw for adjusting the position of the holder toward the anvil, substantially as shown,and for the purpose specified.
