WEARING SURFACE FOR DOOR MATS, FLOORS, &0.
No. 527,094. Patented oet. 9, 1894.

HERBERT'DRAKE-'WHITELEL OF CHEETHAM., ENGLAND.l
WEARING SURFACE FOR DOOR-MATS, FLOORS, 86C.
l SPECIFICATION 'forming part of Lettersfratent No. 527,694, dated october 9, 1894. Application led April 13, 1894. Serial No. 507,396. v(No model.) Patented in England August Z5, 1891, No. 14,339.`
To all whom, it may concern: f
Be it known that I, HERBERT DEAKE WHITELEY, a subject of the Queen ofGreat Britain, and a resident of Gheetham, in the 5 county of Lancaster, yKingdom of England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wearing Surfaces for Door-Mats, Floors, Coverings for the Feet, Furniture, and other ObJects, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great BritainNo. 14,339, bearing datek August 25, 1891,) of'which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in..
wearing surfaces, such as are employedinthe form of blocks, disks, erin other lconvenient forms, in frames or otherwise, asdoor mats,
treads for stair-cases, carriage steps, Iiooring and similar wearing surfaces, also for coverings for the feet, furniture and other objects.
My invention has for its object to provide means whereby the said blocks, disks, or other raised wearing surfaces can be more readily and securely fixed to any desired part,
, than heretofore has been the case, without the assistance of screws or the like separate Similar letters referto similar parts through? out the several views. y
In carrying out my invention and referring to the figures generally, 'my improvements consist in forming a perforated spiked piate a and casting it into a block, disk, or other suitably shaped raised wearing surface b, the spikes c serving to secureit in position, in lieu of using separate fastenings, such as screws or nails.
The blocks, disks, or other raised wearing surfaces b, I preferably form `of rubber or of lead or an alloy of lead or other metal,in any suitable shape, either separately', as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, or -a. number thereof suijtably combined, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7 .and 8. r n
'The spiked platea, which may be. cast or stamped out of suitable metal, I form with perforations d and thennder sidel thereof withshort projections e, which serve to keep it a little distance apart from the `botto'm'of the mold in which the spiked platea is placed, so as to permit the rubber or metal running through-.t he perforations d of and underneath thespiked plate a and thus cover both sides and firmly secure it to the block, disk, or other raised wearing srface b. v
In some cases I may form the perforated plate a, with ka screwed shank or Shanks, in lieu of the spike or spikes c.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A wear plate comprising a perforated .spike plate, and the material in which the said spike plate is Acast'and embedded, 'said material covering the upper and lower sides of the spike plate and extending through the Aperforations thereof substantially as de'- scribed.A
2. A wear plate comprising the perforated spike plate, the material in which said plate is embedded and cast, said material covering both the upper and the lower sides of the said plate, and extending through the openings thereof, and the projections e extending downwardly from the lower side of the spike plate, substantially as described.
ln witness whereof'lvhave hereunto setmy hand in presence of two witnesses.Y r
HERBERT DRAKE WHITELEY.
