To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH HERMAN STUBNEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and original Improvement in Elastic Heels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The objects of this invention are to secure an elastic heel which may be easily removed from the boot or shoe for the purpose of interchange or renewal, to reduce the cost of construction, to enable the retaining-plate for the heel to be employed as an ice-creeper, if such is desired, to enable the person wearing the said retaining-plate and creeper to walk on the ice without slipping thereon, and to secure other advantages and results, some of which may be referred to in connection with the description of the working parts.

The invention consists in the improved elastic heel and in the arrangements and combinations of parts of the same, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth and finally embraced in the clauses of the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan of my improved heel, showing the upper side thereof. Fig. 2 is a section taken at line I and Fig. 3 is a section taken at line y of Fig. 1.

In said drawings, 10 indicates the body of the heel, which comprises a block or body of rubber or other similarly elastic material adapted to conform in plan to the rear portion of the sole of a boot or shoe. At the upper side of the said block or body the same is made hollow or is centrally recessed, as shown at 11, to receive a retaining-plate 12, adapted .to be fastened on the bottom of the shoe or boot at the heel end thereof. The said retaining-plate is preferably flat on the upper side to provide a suitable bearing against which the rear portion of the sole of I the shoe may be fastened by means of screws or other suitable fasteners. Around the edges of the said retaining-plate 12, on the under side,a depending rib 13 is formed, adapted to enter a corresponding groove at the outer sidesof the recess 11, the said rib having a V-shaped under side, whereby it is adapted to present to the ground when the elastic heel is removed a more or less sharp edge, which will serve to bite into the ice if one be walking thereon, and thus prevent any slipping. The top of the said V-shaped rib projects out laterally and forms a horizontal or approximately horizontal shoulder 14, over which the elastic rubber body extends on all sides of the heel, said shoulder 14 serving in retaining the elastic heel in place under ordinary circumstances; but because of the elasticity of the heel the same can be readily withdrawn from the retaining-shoulder, and thus detached from the shoe.

At the center of the recess 11 the same is concavous on its upper surface, so that the center of the heel will be more or less hollow, and thus permits of increased elasticity in walking, the said concavous portion of the recess being surrounded by a lip 15, which extends inward over the shoulder, and by a rib 16, which fits within the depending rib 14 of the plate, and thus more certainly and securely prevents the heel from being moved laterally out of place in walking or when making any unusual exertion of the foot, and thus the heel is held with greater security and firmness upon the heel-plate under ordinary conditions, but is readily removed by turning down one edge of the elastic heel and drawing the same away from the shoulder.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is l. The improved heel herein described comprising a body of rubber or similarly-elastic material or composition, which body is hollow on the upper side, provided with an inwardlyextending lip or tongue and with an upwardlyextending rib, and a plate adapted to be fastened to the sole of the shoe and havinga rib with an outwardly-extending shoulder over which the lip is secured, the upwardly-extending rib of the rubber body extending against the inner side of the rib of the said plate, substantially as set forth.

The improved heel herein described comprising a body of rubber or similarly-elastic material or composition, Which body is hollow on the upper side, provided With an inwardlyextending lip or tongue and with an upwardlyextending rib, and a retaining-plate adapted to be fastened to the sole of the shoe and having around its edges a depending rib with an outwardly-extending shoulder over which the lip is secured, the upwardly-extending rib of the rubber body extending against the inner side of the rib of the said plate, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of the heel-plate 12, having a rib 18, at its outer edge which is V-shaped on its under side to form a biting lower edge, and having a shoulder at its upper surface, and an elastic block centrally concavous and grooved to receive the rib, and having an inwardly-extending lip adapted to overlie the outer shoulder of the plate, whereby the said rubber block is adapted to be withdrawn from the said plate, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination of a metallic plate having a fiat upper side on which the heel portion of the sole of the shoe rests, and at the lower side at the edges having a depending rib with a V-shaped under side and an outwardly-extending shoulder, and an elastic heel centrally recessed and having a groove in which the V-shaped rib lies snugly and having an inwardly-extending lip overlying said shoulder.
