AUGUSTUS C. JOGHMUS AND FRANK M. BOUGHTON, OF MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA.
DOOR-BOLT SOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,924, dated October 2, 1894.
Application filed April 5, 1894. Serial No. 506,415. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: a
. Be it known that we, AUGUSTUS O. J OCEI MUS and FRANK M. BoUcH'roN, citizens of the United States, residing at Monterey, in the county of Monterey and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BottomDoor-Bolt Sockets; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bottom door bolt sockets, and has for its object to provide a simple and effective means for keeping the socket clear of dirt and other material and avoiding the necessity of cleaning the same.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of the improved door bolt socket. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in both the views. I
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a lower head or plug having a central opening extending th'erethrough in a vertical direction as at 2, and anupper shoulder 3 above which are diametrically disposed pins or studs 1. Within the opening 2 is secured a coiled spring 5, and inserted through the said spring and into the opening 2 is the shank 6 of a socket closing head 7, consisting of an elongated flat body with alower .fiange extending outwardly on opposite sides striker plate 9 of rectangular form and hav-' ing therein a central rectangular opening 10,
around which the metal in the cylinder or tube is increased in thickness down to the point where a shoulder 11 is formed, and against which the opposite flanged portions of the socket head are adapted to bear to hold the rectangular body of the socket in proper position relatively to the upper surface of the striker plate, the said socket head being held in flush position by the action of the spring 5 bearing against the under side of the same. Thus it will be seen that when the'device is in position the bolt socket is always closed. and is prevented from becoming clogged or filled with dirt or other material and by means of the bayonet jointforming connection between the two parts, a ready tion of a lower head with a shoulder, a central vertical opening and oppositely extending pins orstuds, a spring mounted in the central opening, a socket closing head engaging the said spring, and an upper striker plate throughwhich the said socket head extends and lies flushed with the upper surface of the same, the said striker plate being formed with an integral tube or casing which surrounds the remaining portion of the device and has lower slots to engage the said pins or studs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUSTUS O. JOCHMUS. FRANK M. B'OUGHTON.
