UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST VEINANDY, OF NEW RIEGEL, OHIO.
BLOTTER-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,880, dated September 11, 1894.
Application filed December 23, 1893. $erial No. 494,547. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUST WEINANDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Riegel, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, haveinvented a new and useful Blotterilolder, of which the following is a specifica- My invention relates to blotting pad holders, and it has for its object to provide a retracting or recoiling holder for blotting pads, whereby the blotter, when not in use, is supported above the desk or table in view of the writer to avoid the confusion due to the concealment of the blotter by the papers upon the desk or table, the support or standard of such holder being capable of adjustment to Vary the height to which the pad is drawn, and other parts of the structure being adjustable to insure the support of the pad in a position convenient to the writer.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following descriptron, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder embodying my invention, with the standard arranged vertically upon the desk. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the disposition of the parts when the improved holder is attached to the side of the desk. Fig. 3 is a partial side view, broken away to show the interior construction of the recoiling device. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the standard. Fig. 5 is a detail View of the stop for limiting the movement of the tape.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a standard constructed of telescoping sections, of which the lower or socketsection 2 is provided with a set-screw 3, to engage and hold the slidable section l at the desired adjustment, and is further provided at its lower end with a base 5, provided with perforations, for the reception of retainingscrews 7 by which the base may be secured to the top of the desk or table.
Fitted upon the upper end of the slidable section of the standard is a socket-piece 8, provided with a transverse perforation 9, in which is adj ustably fitted a lateral arm 10, a
set-screw 11 being arranged in the socketpiece to engage and lock said arm at the desired extension. An additional set-screw 12 is employed to secure the socket-piece detachably upon the extremity of the slidable member of the standard.
13 represents a blotting pad, comprising the rectangular frame 14, and acentral crossbar 15, which connects intermediate points of the sides of said frame, and a sheet-metal holding plate 16, provided with up-struck extremities 17 to engage the ends of the rootangular frame and thus secure the blotting paper 18 in operative position.
Connected to the center of the cross-bar 15 is one end of a flexible tape 19, the other end of said tape being connected to a retracting or recoiling device 20, which consists, essentially, of a spring-actuated drum 21, mounted in a casing 22, said casing being provided With a lateral opening 23 through which the tape extends. The tension of the spring 25 which actuates the drum is sufficient to coil the tape and elevate the pad to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, when released by the operator. The casing 22 is connected to the outer extremity of the lateral arm 10 by means of the interlocked loops 27, thus forming a universal joint to permit of the free swinging movement of the casing.
Reference to Fig. 2 will show that when the device is attached-to the side of a desk or table the slidable section of the standard, and the socket piece carried thereby, are dispensed with and the arm 10 is fitted in the socket-section of the standard in place of said slidable side member.
From the above description it will be seen that the parts comprising the improved holder are relatively adjustable to vary the height to which the pad is drawn, and the part of the desk over which it is suspended, and the connection of the drum casing to the lateral arm permits the free movement of the pad without causing the tape to bind in its passage into or from said casing.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In order that the movement of the tape,
when the holder is released, may be limited to hold the blotter within convenient reach of the operator, I provide an adjustable stop 28, in the form of a sleeve through which the tape passes, said stop being fitted with a setscrew 29 to lock it at any desired point of the tape. This stop is shown in Fig. 1 in its operative position, and when the holder is released the tape will recede into the retracting device until the stop engages the casing of such device. The stop may be adjusted upon the tape to maintain the holder at any desired distance from the surface of the desk.
Having described this invention, what I claim is- A blotter-holder comprising a standard having telescoping sections, means for securing one of the sections to atable or desk, a socketpiece fitted revolubly on a terminal section and having a transverse perforation, a lateral arm fitted adj ustaloly in said perforation, means for securing the lateral arm at the desired adjustment, a recoilingdevice loosely connected to the outer end of the lateral arm, a tape connected to the recoiling-device, a pad attached to the free end of the tape, and a stop adj ustably secured to an intermediate part of the tape to limit the retraction thereof, substantially as specified.
In testimony that L claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST WEINANDY.
