0. A. FORSBERG,
STRIKING BAG. No. 524,894. Patented Aug. 21, 1894.
WITNESSES. INVENTOR A TTOHNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL A. FORSBERG, OF NEW WHATCOM, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO SUSIE A. ROBERTS,"OF SAME PLACE.
STRIIKING-BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 524,894, dated August 21, 1894.
Application filed October 27,1893- Serial No. 489,248. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARLA. FORSBERG, of New Whatcom, in the county of Whatcom and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Striking-Bag, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of the improved striking bag, taken on line 1-1 in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2-2 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a side sectional elevation of a modified form.
I Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to construct a striking bag for the use of athletes and others practicing the and boxing.
My invention consists in the combination of a convex base piece provided with a weight in the bottom thereof, or an equivalent spring for holding it in an upright position, a tube inserted in the base piece and provided with a set screw, a rod inserted in the base piece, and a leather covered, hollow rubber ball attached to the upper end of the rod.
It also consists in a rubber spring for replacing the weight, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The base piece A, which is provided with a convex lower surface, is furnished with a recess a. in the bottom thereof, for receiving the weight B,which is secured in place by means of screws. The upper surface of the base piece A is concaved, and at the center thereof is formed a boss I), in which is inserted the tube 0. The said tube 0, near its upper end, is provided in one side with a set screw 0, and in the tube 0 is inserted a rod D, to the upper end of which is secured a hollow elastic rubber ball E, furnished with a leather cover F.
In use, the device stands upon the floor, and the ball E is raised to a suitable height;
the rod D is clamped by the set screw 0, and the user of the device strikes the ball E, and the blows are made to succeed each other while the ball is swinging in various directions.
When it is desired to use the striking bag with the spring resistance instead of the weight, the weight Bis removed and replaced by a wooden block having a central cavity, and a soft rubber disk G is secured to the wooden block by means of a screw (1, which draws the central part of the rubber disk into the cavity. This construction prevents the screw 01 striking the surface uponwhich the rubber disk G rests. In the present case the said disk is attached to a board e, which in turn is secured to the floor.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the base piece A is replaced by a lens-shaped base piece A, in the bottom of which is inserted a hemispherical weight B. H In other respects the device shown in Fig. 3 is like that shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a striking bag, the combination of a convex base piece, a standard rising from the base piece and carrying at its upper end an elastic ball, and means, substantially as described, for holding the base piece andstandard in an upright position.
2. In a striking bag, the combination of a convex base piece, a standard rising from the base piece and carrying at its upper end an elastic ball, and a weight secured to the base piece, for holding the same and the standard in an upright position, substantially as described.
CARL A. FORSBERG.
