As the target will rock from side to side until it comes to a standstill, it will be evident to the judges and spectators that it was struck; but this rocking motion may be regulated by iiattening the base of the sphere 17 to a greater or less degree without destroying its yielding action. By this construction it will be seen that the target is held against dislodgment and automatically returned to its normal position when stabbed or hit with a saber.
As it is customary to have the targets at different elevations to represent a man in a reclining, kneeling, or standing position, I provide a vertically-adjustable standard with means to hold it in its adjusted position. This means consists of a rack 2l, secured to one side of the telescoping upright l2 and adapted to be engaged by a pawl 22, playing through an opening 23 in the base l and secured to the said base by a spring 24:.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, a telescopin g hollow standard, a movable target detachably seated thereon, and means depending in the standard for holding the target seated and for automatically returning the same to its seat after being dislodged therefrom.
2. In a device of the class described, a telescoping hollow standard, a movable target supported thereon, a weight suspended in the standard, and a lexible connection between the weight and the target, whereby the target is firmly supported and automatically returned to its normal position.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a vertically-adj ustable standard having a head provided with an aperture, a movable target supported on said head and composed of two spheres connected by a rod, and a resetting device connected to the lower sphere and extending through said aperture to automatically return the target to an upright position.
4. A target for cavalry practice composed of a base, a vertically adjustable, tubular upright mounted in said base, an oscillating target composed of two spheres, the lower one of which is yieldingly supported on the upright, and means in the upright to reset the target.
5. In a device of the class described, a base having feet detachably secured thereto, one of which is slidable thereon to adapt it to be projected on either side thereof.
6. In a device of the class described, a'base having transverse intersecting recesses, a sliding foot mounted in one of said recesses and an intersecting foot detachably mounted in the other recess to hold the sliding foot in position.
7. In a device of the class described, a base having transverse intersecting recesses, an upper sliding foot in one of said recesses, a lower detachable foot mounted in the other recess and provided with means to secure it to the base, said lower foot serving to hold the upper foot in its recess.
S. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a standard composed of a tubular upright vertically adjustable in the base and provided with a head, a target posited on said head and a resetting device extending through the head into the upright.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination of a standard composed of a tubular base andatubular upright verticallyadjustable in said base and provided with a head, a target having a spherical base provided with a fiattened bearing-surface and a resetting device extending through the head into the upright.
10. In a device of the class described, a telescoping hollow standard having a flat head, a target having a spherical base seated on said head and adapted to roll thereon when dislodged from its seat, and means dependingin the standard to automatically reset the target. 11. In a device of the class described, a standard composed of a tubular base and a tubular upright vertically adjustable in said base, a rack on the upright, a spring on the base, a pawl on the spring to engage the rack, a target detachably posited onv the upright and means in the upright to reset the target.
l2. The combination with a tubular standard, of a target yieldingly supported thereon and composed of an upper sphere adapted to receive the blow, a lower sphere seated on the standard and a stem connecting the spheres, and means in the standard for holding the target in an upright position and for automatically returning it to such position after being dislodged by the blow.
