No. 120,650. Patented Nov-7,1871.
UNITED STATES PATENT Q'FFICE.
THOMAS H. JOYCE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOB TO HIMSELF AND JACOB COHEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAT-BALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,650, dated November 7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. J OYGE, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cat Cork Ball, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved toy. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical longitudinal section of the same taken through the line 40 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents the hat or stick.
Similar letters of referen ce in dicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved toy for boys, to be used in playing in a manner similar to the game known as old cat, and it consists in the toy constructed as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a piece of wood made in the form of a rectangular pyramid, with the lower part of one side out off, as shown in Fig. 2, the face thus formed being the base or bottom of the toy when arranged for play. 'In the opposite side of the block A, from the bottom or cut-off part, is
formed a circular recess, a, to receive the ball B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The ball B may be made of wood, rubber, or other suitable material; but I prefer to make it of cork, as being elastic and at the same time light, so that, should it strike a person or thing, it will cause no injury. C represents the hat or stick.
In playing with this toy the block A is arranged, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with the ball B in the recess a. The upwardly-projecting or pointed end of the block A is then struck a sharp downward blow with the hat or stick C, which projects the ball into the air, which ball must be struck with the bat or stick C before it falls to the ground.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An improved toy, consisting of the block A a and ball B, said parts being constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The ball B, made of cork to adapt it to be played with safety, substantially as herein shown and described.
THOMAS H. JOYCE.
