A. H. COWEN.
LAMP HEATER ATTACHMENT.
No. 524,667. Patented Aug. 14, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER H. COWEN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
LAMP HEATERATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 524,667, dated August 14, 1894.
Application filed December 22, 1893. Serial No. 494,420- (No modeli) To aZZ whomit may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER H. OoWEN,
a citizen of the United States, residing in the clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a heating attachment for lamps, and it consists in certain details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp showing a sectional view of the heating device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the support for the heater.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for the ordinary illuminating lamp, whereby the heat from thelamp chimney is received and radiated so as to warm the air of the room.
A is a lamp of any suitable or convenient form, having the ordinary chimneyB such as is used for illuminating purposes.
C is a ring of a little larger diameter than that of the top of the chimney.
D D are vertically arranged hooks fixed to the ring and turned over toward the inside so that the bight or upper curves of the hooks will rest upon the top of the chimney, thus supporting the ring in a horizontal position. The wire of which this hook is formed extends outwardly and radially beyond the ring 0, as shown at E, and at the outer ends these wires are bent so as to clasp a supplemental ring F of larger diameter than the ring C and which is concentric therewith. The outer ends of the wires E after clasping the outer ring to which they are secured, extend upwardly as shown at E, and thus form guides within which the lower edge of the heating drum G is received. This drum is thus supported above the lamp chimney, so that all theheated air and products of combustion from the lamp enter the drum, passing up to the top, thence being deflected downwardly between the outer and inner cylinders of which the drum is formed, the inner cylinder being shorter than the outer one, and leav ing a passage H between the upper edge and -the top for this purpose, thus heating the drum as well as escaping through the openings I around the bottom as shown. The heat thus radiated from the drum is sufficient to raise the temperature in any room of ordinary size so as to make it comfortable in any but extreme cold weather.
By supporting the heater directly upon the top of the chimney, no separate supplemental stand is required and the apparatus is more cheap and convenient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The heater attachment for lamp chimneys consisting in two concentric rings, C, F, and a series of horizontal connecting wires E, formed with bends holding and clasping said rings in proper relation to each other; the outer ends of said wires being bent upwardly into arms E to receive the lower end of a drum, and the inner ends of said wires terminating in the vertically extending downwardly opening hooks D adapted to receive the upper end of a lamp chimney within them and rest upon its upper edge and a drum G mounted within the said arms E, substantially as herein described.
Indwitness whereof I have hereunto set my han ALEXANDER H. COWEN.
Witnesses:
