Specification forming part of Iletters Patent No. 52,381, dated February 6, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID B. BoYN'IoN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Boot and Shoe Blacking Ottoman; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had t. to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section ihrough'the line so w, Fig. 2, the cover being raised. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of my improved ottoman, the top or cover being removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section through the line y y, Fig. 2.

My invention has for its object the furnishing a convenient apparatus for blacking boots and shoes and a convenient receptacle for the boot-blacking implements, and which, when closed, shall be an ornamental and useful article of furniture; and it consists, iirst, in the combination of a cam with the foot-rest and with the ottoman; second,in the combination of a foot-rest, cam, brush-drawer, blacking-receptacle, and scraper with the ottoman, as hereinafter more fully described.

Ais the bottom,B the ends, C the sides, and D the top or cover, ofthe ottoman. E is a horizontal partition through the box immediately beneath the cover D, sufficient space being left between the cover D and the partition E for the foot-rest and for the covers and knobs of blacking and brush receptacles.

Through the partition E is formed an opening, F, of sufficient size to allow the blackin g brush or brushes to be placed in and taken out ofthe brush-drawer G. This drawer is placed immediately beneath the opening F, and is supported by and slides upon grooved slots H, as shown in Fig. l.

Stops, one of which is shown at I, Fig. 3, may be used to prevent the drawer Gfrom being pushed in too far.

The opening F may be closed by a lid, J, hinged to the partition E, if desired.

The foot-rest K is connected to the partition E and retained in place by the pins L, upon the lower ends of which may be formed heads, to prevent the foot-rest from being disconnected from the partition E. The footrest K is raised and lowered by the action of the cam M, which is attached to and operated by the shaft N.

The outer end of the shaft N extends through the side O of the ottoman and terminates in a knob, O, by means of which the shaft and cam are turned and the foot-rest raisedl or lowered at pleasure. The inner end of the shaft N is supported in' bearings P, attached to the under side of the partition E, as shown in Fig. 3.

When the foot-rest K is lowered it rests upon the upper surface of the partition E and allows the cover D to be closed; but when required for use it can be raised by turning the cam M, and it then rests upon the cam M, being steadied and kept in place by the pins L.

R is the blackingbottle, which rests upon the bottom A of the ottoman, or it may rest upon a shelf or lstand erected in the lower part of said ottoman for its support.

S is the stopper or cover of said bottle R,

and to which is attached a rod, T, and sponge U, for applying the blacking to the boots or shoes.

V is a scraper for removing the mud from the kboots or .shoes preparatory to applying the blackin g.

The upper part, o', of the side O is hinged to the lower part of said side, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to allow access to the lower part of the ottoman for removing the. drawer Gr to clean it when necessary. The said lower part ofthe ottoman may be used as a receptacle for slippers, boots, or shoes when required.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the cam M with the foot-rest K, and with the ottoman, for raising and lowering said foot-rest, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the foot-rest K, cam M, brush-drawer G, blacking-receptacle It, and scraper V with the ottoman, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
