UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLEMENT GOULD, OF MAMARONECK, NEW YORK.
NAPHTHA-LAUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 523,635, dated July 24, 1894. Application filed April 25, 1894- Serial No. 508,947. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLEMENT GOULD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mamaroneck, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N aphtha-Launches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the construction of naphtha launches and has for its object to provide a construction in which the naphtha tank shall be kept constantly cool by the circulation of water about it and which furthermore shall provide for the ready escape from the tank compartment of any naphtha that might from any cause whatever escape into the compartment.
-With these ends in view I have devised the simple and novel construction of which the following description in connection with the accompanying drawing is I a specification, numbers being used to designate the several parts.
The figure is a section of the bow of a naphtha launch illustrating the application thereto of my novel improvement. 1
1 denotes the keel, 2 the side of the launch, 3 deck beams and 4 a water tight bulk head which separates the tank compartment designated by A from the rest of the launch. This bulk head in practice is well calked and leaded and is also sheathed'on its forward side with copper.
5 denotes the tank which fits closely in compartment A at the bow of the launch, bulk head 4 serving as the rear wall of said compartment. The exact shape of this oompartment is not of the essence of my invention. The tank is of course made to fit the compartment closely and is held firmly in place by the deck beams.
6 denotes holes in the side of the launch near the keel, one only being shown, which permit free circulation of sea water in the tank compartment completely surrounding the tank with water and tending to keep the naphtha within the tank perfectly cool. In practice the condenser pipes, not shown, pass through these holes.
7 denotes series of holes on opposite sides of thelaunch both above and below the water line, the number of these holes is of course not of the essence of my invention. I have shown four in the drawing which Ifind quite sufficient in practice. These holes permit free discharge of the circulating water in the tank compartment and also owing to the fact that they are at the water line permit the free escape from the tank compartment into the sea of any naphtha that may escape from any cause whatever from the tank or from the connections or that might be spilled in filling the tank. Enough of these holes are provided and they are placed close enough together so that whether the launch be loaded heavy or light some one of the holes will be practically at the water line. I thus completely avoid all danger resulting from the accumulation of naphtha within the tank compartment even should serious leakage occur.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A naphthalaunch having at its forward end a compartment separated from the rest of the launch by a water tight bulk head, a naphtha tank within said compartment, holes 6 to permit entrance of sea water into the compartment to surround the naphtha tank and series of holes 7 at the water line which permit the discharge of the circulating water from the compartment also the discharge of naphtha which may leak from the tank or escape into the tank in filling.
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' CLEMENT GOULD. Witnesses:
A.'W. EVARTS, JOSEPH L. OOONNELL.
