UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS BASTET, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PROPELLING CANAL-BO ATS AND OTHER VESSEI S- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,248, dated November 4, 1873; application filed June 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs BAsTE'r, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved BoatPropeller, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is partly a plan view and partly a horizontal section of my improved arrangement of propelling apparatus, the section be-' ing taken on the line a; w of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is partly a side elevation and partly a longitudinal sectional elevation, the latter being taken on the line g y of Fig. 1. Fig. .3 is a transverse sectional elevation, showing the slides, by the vertical elevation of which the wheels are enabled to operate as ordinary paddle-wheels when the boat is unloaded.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the channels for receiving the water at the bow quarters and conducting it to the wheels B in the stern quarters. The openings 0 at the bows are as high as the draft of the boat will allow, and the channels descend to the place of discharging onto the wheel as low as the bottom of the boat will allow, to obtain as much descent as possible. The height of the channels will be somewhat less than the radius of the Wheels, and above them the wheels will be cased over, as at D; but below, and at the rear, openings E will be provided for the escape of the water. F represents the slides, one of which is placed on the outer side of each wheel and channel.
After the boat is unloaded, and the bowopening 0 is elevated above the water, these slides are moved up so as to admit water from the sides.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The propeller-wheels B 13, combined with close channels A A, inclined downwardly from bow to stern, and receiving the water from the surface in front of the boat and discharging it at the rear, as described, whereby the surfacewaves from the front of the boat that tend to cause the washing of the banks are prevented, as and for the purpose set forth.
LOUIS BASTET.
