SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 523,593, dated July 24, 1894.

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. POOLEY, 0 Brooklyn, in the county of Anne Arundel and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in shirts.

The object of the invention is to cheapen the production of shirts by reducing the quantity of material required, and number of stitches, and amount of work necessary in putting shirts together.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of mens shirts, whereby an exceedingly strong, and durable shirt is produced with a minimum amount of material, and work in the manufacture.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and in combinations of parts more fully and particularly pointed out.

Referring to the accompanying drawings:-- Figure 1, is a front view of the shirt with portions of the sleeves and front pieces of the shirt broken away. Fig. 2, is a similar view of the back of the shirt. Fig. 3, is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 Fig. 2. In the drawings the reference letters a, and 1), indicate respectively, the front and rear tail pieces of the shirt.

the sleeves and constitute the body of the shirt in connection with the bosom and the tail pieces. This is accomplished by forming each arm piece substantially as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, wherein the arm pieces are of such length as to extend inwardly to the neck band,

from the neck band. If an open front shirt,

is desired these edges can be stitched together.

The inner edge of the bodypart of each arm piece at or about its central portion has a cut out portion 9, to receive the neck band. The front vertical edges h, of the arm pieces can be cut downwardly from the neck opening g, of desired contour to receive the bosom (1, so that said edges It, can be sewed to the edges of the bosom by stitches d, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. I

It will be observed that in making the shirt the sleeve portions of the arm pieces 0, are doubled together longitudinally with their longitudinal edges sewed together as usual to the arm pit to form the sleeves. From the sleeve the under edges of the body portions of the arm pieces extend along the front and rear of the shirt to the bosom and to the rear split, respectively.

The tail piecesare suitably formed and sewed together at their vertical edges. The front tail piece has a central cut-out portion 2, 1n its upper edge to receive the lower portion of the bosom to the edge of which said tail piece is secured by stitches d. c The upper straight edges of the front, on both sides of the bosom are securedby stitching a, to the lower edges of the body portions of the arm pieces between the bosom and the vertical edges of the rear piece b, beneath the sleeves.

The rear piece b, has its upper edge sewed to the lower edges of the body portions of the two arm pieces by stitches b, extending from the rear opening into the shirt to the V6113]: cal edges of the front piece a, beneath the sleeves. The rear split or opening can ex- ICO tend a suitable distance into the rear piece b, if desired as shown in Fig. 2.

The reinforce pieces f, extend over the body portions of the arm pieces from the neck band to the sleeves and onto the front and rear pieces a, b, and around the inner ends of the sleeves so as to overlap beneath the same. Each reinforce piece is cut, substantially of the form shown in Fig. 6, with the inner straight edgej, extending from the cut out portion is, for the neck band, to one end of the piece so as to form the vertical edge j, coinciding with the rear vertical edge of the body portion of one of the arm pieces at the rear opening into the shirt. The opposite inner edge of the reinforce piece is out, between the opening 70, and the lower front end of the piece, to fit the edge of the bosom to which it is suitably secured by stitches d, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 6. The outer edge of each reinforce piece is formed with the inwardly curved or concaved cut out portion Z, as clearly shown in Fig. 6, having the outwardly extendinglip or tongue m, at one end, so that when the reinforce piece is doubled over the shoulder of the shirt and extends down at the front and rear, said cut-out portion l, will outline the sleeve as usually used in shirts and the ends thereof will meet beneath the sleeve at the arm pit portion thereof so that the tongue m, will overlap the opposite end m, of the cut-out portion Z, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

The reinforce pieces are of such length as to extend down below the body portions of the arm pieces on to the upper portions of the pieces a and b, and thereby overlap and cover the stitches a, and b.

The two similar reinforce pieces are at their lower edges united to the upper portions of the front and rear pieces a and b, a distance below stitches a, and b by the stitches n, and the outer portions of said reinforce pieces are stitched to the arm portions, at 0, completely around the lines of junction between the sleeves and body portions so as properly outline and reinforce the sleeve portions and form proper sleeve or arm openings. The overlapping portions of the reinforce pieces at the lower ends of the arm openings are stitched together so that the tongue m, is stitched to the portions m. The sleeves are thus thoroughly braced and strengthened and particularly beneath the same where each reinforced piece overlaps, and the overlapped portions are stitched together and to the arm portions.

In the present instance the bosom 1s shown as inserted in the shirt body and st tched to the edges of the arm reinforce and tall pieces, but I do not wish to limit myself to such particular arrangement orsecuring of the bosom. By this peculiar arrangement the number of pieces and quantity of material required in making mens shirts are reduced and the shirt produced is very durable and strong and is thoroughly braced and reinforced throughout and wherever'necessary, and also obv1ating the necessity of sewing in the sleeves and doing away with the usual four yokes.

It is evident that various changes might be made in the forms, arrangements and constructions of the parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my 1nvention, hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but consider myself entitled to all such changes as fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

The herein described shirt composed of a bosom, a neck band, the two arm pieces forming the sleeves and a portion of the body by extending inwardly to the neck band and bosom andback opening and over the shoulder and down at the front and rear, the front and rear tails secured together at their side edges and at their upper edges to the lower edges of the body portions of the arm pieces, and the two reinforce pieces, each extend ng over a shoulder and down at the front and rear onto and secured to the front and rear tails and surrounding and secured around the inner end of its sleeve and secured to the neck band, bosom and two tails, substantially as described.
