UNITE STATES PATENT OF ICE.
PRESCOTT GA NSON, OF liOGANSPORT, INDIANA.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 510,639, dated December 12, 1893.
Application filed February 24, 1893 Serial No. 463,623- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it'known that I, PRESCOTT GANsoN, of Logansport, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which theneck and shoulders of the wearer, and the neck-band is enabled to retain a collar thereon with a front button only, thus enabling the usual rear button or stud to be dispensed with.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the form of neck-opening contemplated by the present invention.
Figure 1, is a front view of the upper portion of a shirt made in accordance with this invention, the dotted lines indicating the position assumed by the neck-opening when the shirt is being worn. Fig. 2, is a side view of the upper part of the shirt with a collar attached. Fig. 3, shows the separate pieces which enter into the formation of the neckopening in the manufacture of the shirt.
As far as concerns the neck opening and the present invention, the shirt is composed of two overlapping front pieces A, A, constituting the bosom, a back or shoulder piece B, and a neck band C. The opening is formed by cutting out the adjacent edges of the bosom and shoulder pieces A B respectively at a and b, so that when the pieces are fitted and sewed together an opening of the desired form will be produced, the neck band 0, consisting of one straight piece of the material, being then sewed into the opening so formed.
The present invention has to do with the form of the neck opening whereby the necessity of a rear attaching button for the collar is obviated. To this end the neck opening is patterned as fo1lows:-The lateral diameter of the opening is made slightly less than the width of the neck of the person for whom the shirt is designed, while the diameter from.
front to back is made greater, so that when the shirt is put on the neck opening is necessarily distended laterally, such lateral distention being permitted by reason of the surplus width of the opening from front to back. A proper relation between the less and greater diameters of the neck opening is attained by making them in the ratio of eight to nine, this proportion givinga comfortable fit around the neck. --The neck opening is not located entirely forward of the shoulder seams (i. e.,the seams joining the bosom and shoulder pieces A, B), but extends also a short'distance back of the shoulder seams, the opening being formed by cutting out both of the adjacent edges. (See Fig. 3.) The distance, however, from the line of the shoulder seams to the front margin of the neck opening I make about eight times the distance from the line 'of the shoulder seams to the rear margin of the opening, so that the greater part of the neck opening is forward of the shoulder seams. The position of the shoulder seamsis such that the line of the seams conforms to the natural position of the shoulders of the wearer, and the seams strike the neck-opening perpendicularly. The relative distances which the neck-opening extends forward and back of the shoulder seams are calculated by the relation actually existing between the neck and shoulders of a man, and the shirt is thus properly patterned to conform to real physiological requirements. A neck-opening proportioned as stated will fit the neck nicely and will not be subjected to. undue strain when the shirt is worn.
The effect of the described form of neck openingis to keep an ordinary separate collar (D, Fig. 2) thereon without the use of a rear attaching button. When theshirtisworn, the neck opening is pressed out at the sides (as the dotted lines in Fig. l are intended to 7 of its rear margin and the lateral diameter of said neck-opening ascut being less than its 15 diameter from front to rear whereby lateral distention of the neck-opening is permitted when the shirt is worn, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in 20 presence of two witnesses.
PRESCOTT GANSON.
