COVERED BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 523,149, dated July 17', 1894. Application filed December 9, 1893- Serial No. 493,248. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that -I, AMANDA M. LOUGEE, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in CoveredButtons, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

Heretofore cloth-covered buttons have had a projection of textile material at the back by which they may be fastened to garments I face of the button and to that extent destroys the cloth-covered character of the button, besides being exposed to wear and consequent unsightliness. In my invention, I make the face plate flat and instead of turning out the metal thereof around the central opening, I turn the cloth covering in beneath the edge of such opening, and cover the opening by an internal piece of fabric of the same kind as that employed to cover the button, so that, while the button may be attached by through and through stitches, its face is of uniform material and without projections. The button may be provided, in addition, with a filling piece of pierceable material.

Figure 1 in section shows one of my improved buttons; and Fig. 2 a sectional diagram with the different parts of the button separated.

The button to be herein described and claimed is composed of a front plate a, preferablya metallic disk with its edge overturned, the said plate'having a central opening a; a back plate I), also preferably of metal having its edge flanged to fit within the .overturned edge of the plate a, the plate b having a central hole 19'; a textile covering a havlng a central opening 0, the edges of the covering being shut in between the rims of the plates a, b; a face piece (1, preferably of the same material as the covering 0 as the face piece is to cross the hole 0' at the rear side of the front plate; and a non-metallic or textile back e, preferably of cloth. I also prefer to place between the face piece at and the textile back e a non-metallic filling f to thus add solidity and strength to the button. The face piece and textile back located between the front and back plates are clamped at their edges between the rims of said plates, and the textile back may be shaped as shown, to project more or less from the hole'in the back plate, as in ordinary cloth covered buttons.

The covering 0 at and about its central opening is inturned through the hole a of the front plate, and the face piece of like material gives to the face of the button alike color, but my invention would not be departed from if the face piece were of a different material or color.

My improved button may be stitched to clothing by a stitch taken through the face piece, filling, and textile back, the openings at, b affording ready passage for the needle, and the stitch taken may be a fancy or ornamental stitch if desired, so as to show the thread at the center of thebutto'n in a fancy or more or less elaborate and ornamental stitch, and this stitching may be done by machine or by hand.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The herein described button, composed of a front plate and a back plate of metal, each provided with a central opening, a textile cover for the front plate having its center perforated and the edges of such perforation turned under the front plate and confined Within the button beneath the edges of the opening in the .front plate so as to present a substantially flat or plane wearing face, a face piece of textile material arranged within the button and exposed at the opening in the front plate, whereby the exposed face of the button is composed wholly of cloth and without visible metal, and a textile back arranged within the button next the back. plate and exposed at the opening in such 10 back, said parts being combined and arranged substantially as described to enable the stitches to be passed through the face piece, the filling and textile back as set forth.
