PATENT meta.
WILLIAM B. COULTER, OF WA'IERBUR Y, CONNECTICUT.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR PACK-AGE-WRAPPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 522,007, dated June 26, 1894.
Application filed January 29,1894. Serial No. 498,362. (No model.) I
I ofWaterburyfin the countyof New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Fastening Devices for Package- Wrappers; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing, when taken in connection with acco mdanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a view in inside elevation of an ordinary envelope provided with a fastening device constructed in accordance with my invention, the flap of the envelope being open; Fig. 2, a broken view showing the flap of the envelope closed, and the fastening device in use for holding the same in that position; Fig. 3, a view in transverse section on the line a-b of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a detached view of the 7 device; Fig. 5, a view showing my improved fastener as adapted to reversible wrappers; Fig. 6,-a similar view showing the wrapper reversed or turned inside out.
My invention relates to an improvement in fastening devices for package-wrappers, such as envelopes, document-boxes, &c., the object being to produce a simple, cheap, effective and convenient device.
With these ends in view, myinventionconsists in a package-wrapper having a sheetmetal fastening device, as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
As herein shown, I have applied my improved device to an envelope, although, as aforesaid, it is not limited to that use. shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the drawings, it consists of a long strip A of sheet-metal, pointed at its outer end, and havingits inner end furnished with two oppositely projecting integral flexible fingers B B. The metal chosen for making the device is by preference some soft metal, which may be repeatedly bent without breaking.
- In applying the device it is passed through a horizontal slit 0, located in the lower flap D, forming a part of the body of the envelope, then upward through a corresponding, parallel, aligned upper slit 0, located in the overlapping end-flaps D D, also formingparts of the body of the envelope, and then of the envelope, the slits C, C and 0 being arranged in the same vertical line, and the slits O and 0 being arranged with reference to each other, so that when the flap D is folded down into its closed position, they will exactly register with each other, whereby there will be no strain upon the slit 0 which may, if desired, be reinforced by an additional piece of paper, not shown, applied to the inner face-of the flap D D has been closed, the strip is folded down so that its end will lie between the flexible fingers'B B, which are then folded over it, as
through a slit C formed in the upper flap D After the flap shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, whereby the flap is secured in its closed position. If desired the projecting end of the strip may then be bent up over and upon the folded fingers and additional security thus obtained.
fingers F F and G G, the fingers of one pair being slightly separated from the fingers of the other pair. This device is applied so that the fingers of one pair will be located upon the outer face H of'the package-wrapper H, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and the fingers of the other pair on the inner face H of the said wrapper H, as shown in Fig. 6. Then when the wrapper is first used, the fingers FF which are located on the outer face of the wrapper, will be bent over the end of the strip in the manner already described for the simpler form of-the'device, while, on the other hand, when the package is reversed for use inside out, the fingers G'Gwhich are then on the outside, will be used for fasteningthe end of the strip. By thus providing the device with an extra pair of fingers, it becomes adapted foruse in a'reversible wrapper. I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown'and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a package-wrapper having its body constructed with two slits located in line with each other, and having its flap constructed with a slit arranged to register with the upper slit in the said body; of a fastening device consisting of a long strip of flexible sheet-metal, provided at one end with two oppositely projecting integral flexible fingers, the said device being passed through the slits in the body so as to expose its fingers upon the outer face thereof, and through the slit in the flap, and then bent down between the fingers which are closed upon it to hold itin place, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a package wrapper having its body constructed with two slits located in line with each other, and having its flap constructed with a slit arranged to re ister, when the flap is closed, with the upper slit in the body; of a fastening device consisting of a long strip of flexible sheet-metal provided at its inner end with two pairs of oppositely projecting flexible fingers, slightly separated from each other, and respectively located, in the application of the device, upon opposite faces of the body of the wrapper, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
