Be it known that I, CLOTILDE 1. THOMAS, of Evansville, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Retainers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in wearing apparel and more particularly to improvements in devices and attachments for head wear such as ladies hats.

The object of the invention is to provide 7 improved devices which can be easily and quickly attached to ladies head wear, without injury'to the same, to enable the head wear to be securely fastened on the 'head without passing hat pins or the like through the hat, or other article of head wear, and thereby avoiding disarranging or injury to the trimming or body of the hat or head wear.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in an improved article of manufacture, substantially as hereinafter set forth, and fully described in the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, shows a hat provided with the present improvement. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail elevations showing two different forms of my improved article.

In the drawings the reference letter a, indicates any suitable hat or other article of ladies head wear.

1), indicates the improved attachment, each attachmentis in the form of what might be termed a loop or hat pin retainer and is provided with securing ends or eyes located a considerable distance apart, so that the opposite ends of each loop can be sewed or otherwise secured in the crown of the hat near opposite ends thereof, with the portion of the device between the securing ends extending downwardly beside the head of the wearer. If desired the loop can be formed with eyes 0,

at its ends to receive the sewing or other fashat crown, or the article can be formed as acontinuous loop as shown in Fig. 3, with the ends thereof formed as shown to form eyes or the like to receive the sewing or fastening means. Each loop is so bent or otherwise formed as to form the downwardly and rearwardly extending bend or hair pin receiving portion 6, located near the rear end of theloop or article.

In operation, two of these articles are secured to the parts on opposite sides thereof with the opposite ends, near opposite ends of the hat and with the downward and rearward bends e, located near the rear end of the hat and extending downwardly-0n opposite sides of the head where the greatest quantity of hair is located as ordinarily arranged by 1adies. The head wear is secured on the head by passing a'hair pin, or hair pins, through the downward and rearward bends e, into the hair where it is thickest thereby firmly securing the hat on the head without in any way injuring the same or disarranging the trimmings.

These attachments or loops can be furnished in various colors so as to be invisible.

Great advantages, are attained by these peculiar forms of loops or attachments herein employed for by having the attaching points of the device to the hat crown located a considerable distance apart or near opposite ends of the hat the strain on the hat is equalized,

are so arranged that they arelocated opposite that portion of the head where the hair is thickest and where it is usually bunched 0r coiled so that the hair pins have a firm hold and yet so that the strain will come to the front portion of the hat as on the rearend thereof. The hair pins exerting the holding strain on the hat at four points well distributed as it is shown in the accompanying drawings.

These loops can be composed of any suitable material and can be made and sold for attachment to various kinds of hats or other head wear and can be easily or quickly attached or detached as desired.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

The herein described hat pin retainer composed of an elongated rod having widely separated securing means, such as eyes, at its ends arranged to be secured at the front and rear of a hat as set forth, the rod between said eyes being bent downwardly and laterally toward and beyond the fastener at one end, so that when the fastener is secured in the hat the downward and lateral bulge or bend will project rearwardly beside the roll of hair at the rear of the head for the purpose set forth.
