GUSTAV KOLL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ISAAC KAUFMANN & BRO., OF SAME PLACE.
PHOTOGRAPH-ALBUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,569, dated June 19, 1894.
' Applicati n fi ed 0mm 9.1893. Serial No. 487.703. on model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV KOLL, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photograph-Albums, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved photograph album of that class in which not only a number of ordinary leaves for photographs are provided, but in which also a number of folding picture-frames are arranged, by which a number of photographs can be exhibited at the same time, so that the album is adapted in a higher degree for family, exhibition and other purposes; and the invention consists of a photograph album which is composed of an upright supporting frame, a front-plate or wall hinged to the base of the frame, and provided with a number of hinged leaves at the inside of same, a number of frames that are connected with each other by lazy-tong frames, the rearmost frames being hinged at their upper ends to the upright supporting frame against which the entire lazy-tong frames can be folded and a hinged lid that extends over the folding frames and the front-plate or wall, so as to look all the parts together, as will be f ullydescribed hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved photograph album, showing the same in closed position. Fig. 2 is a perspective View, showing the front plate or wall lowered. Fig. 3is a perspective view, of the photograph album, showing the front-plate or wall and the folded picture-frames extended.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the supporting frame of my improved photograph album, which is composed of a base a, a-block b on said base-plate, and an upright portion a. at the rear edge of the base-plate. To the front part of the base-plate is hinged the front plate or wall B of the album, to the inner side of which are applied a number of hinged leaves B that open in the opposite direction from each other from a number of folding frames that move either toward the left or right, as desired. Above the block b are arranged a number of folding-frames C, which are connected at the upper ends by lazy-tong frames D, so that they can be folded up toward the upright portion a of the supporting frame A, as shown in Fig. 2. The fold ing-frames O are arranged in two sets or groups, which fold alongside of each other folding and lazy-tong-connected frames 0 permits the insertion of a number of pictures and the simultaneous display of the same, which isvery desirable, whereby may be exhibited all the members of afamily or all the members of a theatrical company, or for other purposes.
To the upper edge of the upright portion a of the supporting frame A is hinged a lid E which is provided with a handle 6 and with a suitable locking device f at its front edge, the said locking device engaging the front plate or wall B when the same is raised, so as to inclose thereby the folded up frames and the leaves B applied to the inner surface of said front plate or wall as shown in Fig. 1.
When the photograph album is closed, which is accomplished by first folding the lazy-tong frames 0 against the upright portion a of the supporting frame, then moving up the plate or Wall B into the upright position and closing the lid E and locking said front plate or wall by the locking device f on the lid, the album is supported in upright position and takes up a comparatively small space, while being readily available for exhibiting the pictures by lowering said front plate or wall and extending the folding-frames O in the opposite direction from the supporting-frame.
The folding-frames G can be moved sidewise to such an extent that they do not interfere with the regular turning of the hinged leaves B applied to the inner surface of the front plate or wall 13, so that the usefulness of the article is thereby enhanced.
I-Iavmg thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a photograph album, the combination of an upright supporting-frame, folding picture-frames, connected in sets by lazy-tongs andlocated one at each side of said supportlng frame, hinge-connections between the tops of the rear pictu re-frames of each set and the supporting-frame, a lid hinged to the latter, a front-plate or wall hinged to the base of the supporting-frame, and means for holding the said picture-frames, lid and plate or wall in closed position, substantially as set forth.
2. I11 a photograph-album, the combination with an upright supporting-frame, several sets of folding picture-frames located one at each side of said supporting-frame, lazy-tongs connecting .said pictureframes, hingeconncctions between the tops of the rear frames of each set and the supporting-frame, the outer frames of each set having a depending leg whereby the sets of said picture-frames are supported in open position, a lid hinged to the supporting-frame, a front plate or Wall hinged to the base of the supporting-frame, and means for holding said picture-frames, lid and plate or Wall in closed position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GUSTAV KOLL.
