IMPROVEMENT IN SLEDS FOR CHILDREN.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEssE A. GRANDELL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use, certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Sleds for Children; and I do declare the following; to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a view of my improved sled Fig. 2, a view of the same, showing the secondary bed employed by me converted into a chair.

In the drawings like parts of the invention are indicated by the same letters of reference.

The nature of my invention consists (a) in combining with a sled constructed in the usual manner the secondary bed, for the purposes herein after specified; (b) in so constructingthis secondary bed, combined with the sled, that the same may be readily converted in to a chair, for the purposes hereinafter shown.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill speak of the construction and operation of the same.

A shows a sled for children constructed in the usual manner. B shows a secondary bed for the same, placed directly over the bed proper of the sled A, and supported upon a suitable frame-work composed, in the present instance, of the uprights or standards 0, to which are attached the top pieces D. The top pieces D have hinged or attached to their rear ends the top pieces D to which are attached the curved pieces E, connected by the crossbrace F. The top pieces, I), connected as shown, form the rear portion of the frame for supporting the secondary bed B. The curved pieces E and cross-brace F form a handle, by which, when the bed is converted into a chair, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the sled may be pushed along.

The secondary bed B may be formed of carpet or any suitable material, and the framework supporting the same may be connected together by cross-braces position.

G shows two hooks attached to the top pieces D which hooks hook into the staples H when the secondary bed is converted into a chair. The secondary bed B being thus constructed, qhe uprights or standards 0 have their bottom ends inserted into openings at the forward end of the sled A, while the curved pieces E rest upon the rear ends of the runners of the sled, and thus support this portion of the secondary bed B.

It will be observed that the use of the secondary bed B, formed of carpet or any suitable material, enables the party using the sled to throwhiinselt' upon a soft surface rather than upon the hard bed of the sled itself, and at the same time the limbs of the child are placed in a more easy and comfortable position than in the sled usually employed. Again, this secondary bed can be readily converted into a chair by turning the rear half of the same up and fastening the hooks into the staples attached, as described, in which case the curved pieces and cross-head constitute the handle by which the sled may be pushed along.

The sled, as constructed, may be used by boys or girls or both, and will be found particularly applicable to their wants.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with the sled A, the use or employment of the secondary bed B, when the same shall be constructed and combined substantially as set forth, and for the purpose specified.

2. Constructing the secondary bed B and frame-work to support the same in such a manner that the same may be readily converted into a chair, for the purpose specified.
