Description
T.MORTON,. COVER FOR TOBAGGO PIPE BOWLS.- I
Patented June 12, 1894.
FIG7
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS MORTON, OFBIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
coves FOR TosAcco-PiPEBowLs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,173, dated June 12,1894. Application filed IebruarylZ, 1894!. Serial No. 499,883. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS MORTON, a subect of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Lodge Road, in the city of Birmingham, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Covers for Tobacco-Pipe Eowls, of which the following is a specificaion.
My invention relates to an improved comblnation with the bowls of tobacco pipes, of an ad ustable metallic cover made after the manner hereinafter described and in the construction and adaptation of the said cover.
It consists primarily of a cover or mount made in such a manner that shall allow of adjustment or regulation at will, in the amount of opening, so that it may be closed, or partly closed, or entirely open, as may be desired, in the manner subsequently described. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which--- Figures 1 to 10, inclusive are views of the detail parts of this mechanism. Fig. 11, is a plan view of the invention showing it full open. Fig. 12, is a plan view of the invention showing it part closed. Fig. 13, shows it closed, and Fig. 14, shows it in enlarged sectional elevation.
15, is a disk or cover, having the outer rim 16, and a central hole l7,'(see Figs. 1 and 2.)
18, is a flat ring of metal, having the slots 19, cut therein (see Figs. 3 and 4). This ring is then placed in the cover 15, and soldered or otherwise secured thereto.
20, is a table (see Figs. 5 and 6) having the socket or ferrule 21, formed thereon or attached thereto. This socket is made to fit tightly into the bowl of the pipe and thereby to secure the whole of the mount to the said pipe. In this table are made holes 22, which correspond in number to the slots 19, (see Fig. 3.)
23, is a plate or leaf of metal having at each end the pivots 24 and (see Figs. 7 and 8). In some cases instead of these pivots I may use eyelets to effect the same purpose. I now take the table 20, and connect the one end of each of the four leaves thereto, by means of 5c the pivots 24, and the holes 22, yet in such a manner that the said leaves shall be free to turn about such joints (see Fig. 9). Thus it will be seen that the free ends of the leaves may be turned so as to lie in a circular shape as seen in Fig. 10, and when in such a position that they partly overlap each other. This table 20, having the leaves secured thereto in the manner described is now placed in the cover 15 (see Fig. 14), the pivots 25, each taking into its respective slot 19. The lower edge of the rim 16, is now turned over the table 20, as shown, and thus the table and the leaves are secured in the cover, but in such a manner as to permit of a part rotation of the cover to that of the said table. The exterior of the rim 16, of the cover may be made rough or milled if desired to facilitate its being turned around. The now complete mount is placed and fixed in the bowl 26 of a pipe.
Its action is thus:-By part rotating the cover 15, the slots in the plate 18, operate the pivots 25, and bring them nearer to or farther from, the center of the bowl, and so draw the leaves or plates across the mouth of the bowl.
'When turned round to the full extent (as seen in Fig. 13) these leaves cover the mouth of the bowl, in an interlaced manner.
It will be readily seen that according to the distance which the cover 15, is turned around so is the amount of closing. In Fig. 12, for instance, it is shown only partly closed. Although Ihave shown only four of these leaves arranged together, still I may reduce or increase their number. Also I wish to point out that I may find it more convenient in some cases to provide that the slots 19, be made in the table 20, and the fixed ends of the leaves be secured to the interior of the cover- 15, that is, to reverse the position of the fixed and free ends of the leaves. The modes of operation and their functions however will be identical with those already described and shown.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an adjustable opening and closing-mount for tobacco pipe bowls, the combination with the leaves 23, and the table 20 having the socket 21, of the movable cover plates 15 and 18 having the slots 19, the said leaves being pivoted at their one end to the table 20, and the pins 25 at their other end engaging with the slots 19 in the plate 18, all substantially as set forth and shown.
