Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. BLUNDELL, a citizen of. the United States of America, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel- Heads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1. is atop plan of a barrel representing my improved headfitted therein; Fig. 2. a vertical cross-section of the upper portion of the barrel and said head; Fig. 3.a detailed section of said head parts, and a portion of the barrel, showing the headretainer in position for Service; Fig. 4 a top plan of one of the retainers of the head; Fig. 5. a cross-section of said retainer on line 1, Fig. 4. and Fig. 6. is a detailed perspective of one of the retainer pivoting lugs of the head seat.

This invention relates to certain improvements in a barrel head, of that class wherein the head is adapted to be removed from the barrel without removing the barrel hoops, and consists in the construction and arrange- `ment of parts, which are fully Set forth and explained in the following specification and pointed out in the claim. Y

The object of this invention is to render it possible to gain access to the barrel interior and to close the barrel securely without having to remove the barrel hoops or enter any part into the barrel, and in so doing avoid the use of screws, which are liable to rust and prevent perfectness of parts, and also avoid the use of parts which extend beyond the barrel rim, and which are liable to be broken or injured by movement ofthe barrel. Referring to the drawings B represents an ordinary barrel of that class used for packing meats, pickles and the like where it becomes necessary to frequently remove the head. It is intended that one end of the barrel Shall be provided with the ordinary head, and that the opposite end shall be provided with my improved head which is constructedas follows.

.and galvanized, which is made of the diameter corresponding with an ordinary barrel head, and with a feather edge like unto such ordinary head, and is seated with its feather 5 5 edge in the barrel crozing so as to be a permanent iixture of the barrel, and is provided about its inner edge with a somewhat nar-- rowed and deep groove fu, which forms aseat for the flange of the head proper, and is also 6o provided with a series of equidistant studsl c on its upper face, which are respectively provided with side extending lugs c at their upper portion,' and extending toward the head center.

a is a series ofY head retainers made of metal, having a hole P in each, near one end, corresponding withthe studs c, and with a Side recess P at the side of each hole, at the short end, corresponding with the lugs c of studs c. These retainers are respectively arranged on the studs c before rim R is iitted in a barrel, by bringing them to a position over their studs so their long ends extend from the rim, thus bringing their recesses P 7 5 over lugs c of the studs, when they will drop down over the studs, then by turning them to lie fully upon the rim said stud lugs lock them on the studs, andinto position for Service.

D is the barrel head preferably struck from 8o galvanized sheet metal made circular and concaved at its outer face and with a marginal flange D and is'made to a size so its iiange- D will enter the groove V of rim R. It is trussed, at its concaved face or side, by means 8 5 of the cross band F riveted to the head at each end, and raised at its center, and is provided centrally with the strut e, which trussing prevents internal pressure from springing said head to effect its seating. 9o

In use packing is placed in the hollow of groove V and -upon which the head flange is placed. During the time of placing the head D into position the retainers a are turned s o as to lie fully upon rim R outside groove V, and when the head is placed said retainers are grasped, and by some instrument, preferably `a wrench made for such purpose, turned as represented in Figs l and 2 also Fig. 3, so as to bring their long end upon the Ioo margin of head D, and by reason of the inclined form of the under side of said retainers as shown at d in Fig. 3, and in section in Fig. 5, the seid head is forced down upon the pecking in groove 'V and thus e tight ft of the head is effected, and thus by turning the seid retainers the head D may be removed and replaced at will, and all the parts be within the limits of the barrel.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to sccure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

In combination with a. barrel the rim R provided with the groove V and with the studs c; the packing placed in said groove; the head D provdedwith the marginal llange D and the keepers a made at one end with a. hole r 5 and at their portion extending from said hole with a laterally beveled underside, and placed on said studs, and adapted to be turned radially on said studs to bring their beveled under side to ride upon the heed D, substzmzo tielly as set forth.
