WATCH-BOW FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,070, dated J' une 5, 1894. pplativn flled October 11, 1893. Serial No. 487,836. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known thatI, DITONH. ABNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atchison, 1n the county of Atchison and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watchcase Pendants and Bows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a perspective view of my improved pendant and bow for watch cases, complete. Fig 2 is a side viewof the same. Fig. 3 1s a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. i is a longitudinal section on line -'cc in Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the pendant head; the bow, crown, and sleeve having been removed. Fig. 6 is a perspective detail view of the sleeve. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the annular nut appertaining to the pendant and sleeve; and Fig. 8 is a detail view of the bow, removed from the pendant.

My invention relates to the bows and pendants of watch-cases, and has for its object to so construct the pendant that the bow shall be held iirmly in place therein and without possibility of its being accidentally pulled out, and also to provide a pendant which can be made, put together, and appliedto any kind of a watoh-case (i. c. both open-face and hunting-case, key-Winder and stemwinder) at small expense and with little trouble.
With these objects in view, my improvement consists in the novel and specific construction and combination of parts of a bow and pendant, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
On the accompanying drawings, the letter A denotes the tubular neck or shank ot' my improved pendant, which is permanently fastened to the rim of the case in any approved manner. The winding and setting stem is shown at B, and the erownfwhich is screwed,
or otherwise fastened, to the upper end of the stemis shown at C. Above the tubular narrow part or neck A', the body A of the pendn ant proper is made of cylindrical shape, hollow inside, and cut out on opposite sides to form the rectangular recesses or side-openings a, a, the under side of which is made semicircular, as shown at a', to tit the ends of the bow or ring D; a square shoulder or odset a2, being formed on each side of the semicircular recess a. The hollow part ot the pendant body is slightly reduced and screwthreaded exteriorly from the top to about half way down, to fit the interiorly threaded annular nut E 5 and into the recessed body A of the pendant is inserted a sleeve F, of the peculiar shape and construction illustrated more clearly in the detail view Fig. 6. The inside of this sleeve forms a straight cylinder, so that when inserted into the pendant A, it will form a continuation ot' the aperture through which the winding and setting stem B is inserted. On opposite sides on the exterior of the sleeve F, so as to coincide or register with the rectangular openings a in the pendant when the sleeve is inserted into it, is a projection or shoulder F; and this, again, has a further projection or oitset f, the lower part of which has a semicircular recess f coinciding with the semicircular recess a in the pendant proper, above the neck. It follows that when the sleeve is inserted into the pendant, the registering semicircular recesses a and f on opposite sides thereof will form circular apertures for the insertion of opposite ends of the bow D. Each of these ends has an annular notch, d, forming a dovetailed projection D', which projects into the sleeve, so that the bow will be held rmly in place in the pendant by the edges of the coinciding recesses c andf, on each side, projecting down into the annular notches or recesses d at each end of the bow.
When the sleeve F is inserted into the pendant, its lateral shoulders or projections F will project into and fill up the recesses a a on opposite sides of the pendant, so that this will have the appearance of being solid or made in a single piece; the upper end of the sleeve,
on the outside, being flush and even with the threaded upper part of the pendant, and covered by the annular nut or collar E. When this collar is inserted upon the upper threaded end of the pendant and screwed home, t'. e., screwed down until its lower end bears against the upper edges of the shoulders F on sleeve F, it will hold this sleeve firmly in place in the pendant; thereby, as we have seen, also fastening the notched ends D of the bow to the pendant.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, itis believed that theconstruction and combination of parts of myimproved pendant and bow will be readily understood. It will be seen that the pendant consists of three parts only, viz., the body A A', sleeve F F and holding-nut or collar E. No screws are required to hold these parts together; and as they are made (by proper machinery) so as to be interchangeable, and to tit all the standard sizes of cases, any of the parts, if damaged, can easily be replaced by a new part, in a few moments.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination in a Watch case pendant, of the tubular body A, A screw threaded exteriorly at its upper end, having registering recesses a, a, terminatingin semi-circular recesses ct, ct; interior tubular sleeve F, provided with opposite shoulders F', F, having the recessed offsets f,f; andinteriorly-threaded collar or nut E; with the bow or ring D, having annular end-notches or recesses, d, forming dovetailed projections D adapted to engage the circular openings formed by the registering semi-circular recesses a and f in the pendant-body and its sleeve; substantially as described.
