HINGE.

SFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,629, dated May 29, 1894. Application filed December 26, 1893- Serial No. 494,668. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN J. BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolls, in the county of Marion and State of lndlana, have invented certain new and useful Improven1ents in Hinges, of which the following isa specification.

My invention relates to three-part hinges, especially those of'the variety which are used on water closet seats, whereby both the seat and the lid are hinged by a single set of hinges.

The-object of my said invention is to pro vide hinges of the character described in which the-third parts may be easily removed, and with them the lid, leaving the hinges, when the pintles are replaced, similar to ordinary two-part hinges.

A hinge embodying my'said inventionwillbe first fully described, and the novel features thereof then pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying'drawings, whlch are made a part hereof, and on which simllar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a water closet bowl with the seat and lid thereon, said seat and lid being attached by means of my improved hinges; Fig. 2 a detail sectional view\as seen from the dotted line 2 2 in Fig. 1, except that the fragment of the lid shown, 1s shown in raised position, the closed posltlon being shown by means of dotted lines, and-Fig. 3 a horizontal sectional view, on the line of the axis of the pintle, as seen from the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2, except that the lid is shown in closed position, as in Fig. 1. Figs. 2 and 3 are full sized views of my lmproved hinge.

In said drawings the portions marked A, A and A represent the three parts of my lmprovedhingeg B the stationary board or strip to which the seat and cover are hinged; O the water closet seat, and D the water closet lid. Except as to those features expressly stated to be novel, all of these parts are of an ordinary and well known form, and need no special description. The hinge parts A and A are constructed similarly to the corresponding parts of an ordinary deslgn of such hinges, and are secured to the strip B and seat 0 by screws or equivalent to the stationary part tance across the hinge when the partA is removed, so that said pintle point will be substantially flush with the side of the hinge after said part is removed and said pintle reinserted in the two parts A and A while, as will be seen by an inspection of Fig. 8, it is long enough to engage with the screwthreaded boss at, when said part A is attached. It is thus only necessary in changing this from a two-part to a three-part hinge, or from a three-part to a two-part, to remove the pintle A, and either put the lid D, with the parts A attached thereto, in position, and insert said pintles, or remove said lid with said parts, and then insert said pintles;the result being that the seat is changed from a seat withouta lid to one with a lid, or from a seat with a lid to a seat without a lid, without disturbing any of the other parts, or marring the hinge in any way, or leaving any indications that the change has been made. This manifestly is of considerable importance where it is desired to change from one style to another, and this, as is well known, is frequently the case. I am aware that three-part hinges for this purpose have been used which are capable of being detached, but such usually involve some special construction, so that when the third part is detached the remaining parts show some evidence that the detachment has been made.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination'of the two ordinary hinge parts A and A one boss whereon has its perforation screw threaded, a third part A and a screw-threaded pintleA adapted to unite either the two parts or the three parts at will, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the two main hinge parts A and A the pintle A thereto,
