HAM E-LINK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,457, dated May 29, 1894:. Application filed August 17, 1393- Serial No. 433,342. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES STANLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame-Links; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica- The objects of this invention are to give greater protection to the plating or finished surfaces of the h'ame, to provide a more firm and secure fastening, and to obtain other advantages and results some of which will be referred to hereinafter, in connection with the description of the working parts.
The invention consists in the improved hame link and in the arrangements and combinations of parts, all substantially as will be hereinafter described and finally embraced in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the views, Figure l is an elevation of the improved hame link and Fig. 2 is a section of the same taken on line 00. Fig. 3 is a detail of the link-body showing more clearly a certain shoulder for limiting the movement of certain sliding stay pieces.
In said drawings, a indicates the link body, consisting of a wire or rod of metal having its opposite ends turned toward one another, the turned ends a, a, terminating short of a -connection and forming a central ring opening, I), through which the eyes of the hames and the pole ring, 0, are adapted to pass. The said body is curved to conform to the collar, as shown in Fig. 1, in the usual manner.
To prevent the ends a, a, from spreading or being bent out of proper position, I have provided sliding stay pieces, (I, which also serve as guards. These are perforated near their opposite ends and receive the curved body portion a and arms a, a, of the bent rod or wire, a, and couple the parts together preventing said parts a, ad, from either moving from or toward one another under the straining power of co-operating parts. Shoulders, a limit the sliding movement of the stay pieces toward the ends of the link, the said pieces being held thereby away from the hame eyes. The shoulders are preferably formed by reducing the diameters of arms toward their extremities. They may be formed in any other manner. By sliding the stay piece both to one side of the opening, I), and then to the other, the hames may be properly arranged in connection with the link. When the parts are assembled upon the collar in connection with the hames and the pole ring, 0, the said pole ring which latter is arranged between the stay-pieces, at the center of the link and is removable from the link through said central opening, is prevented from striking the hames and injuring the finish of the same by the stay pieces, d, the finished surface, commonly silver plate, being thus preserved. The stay pieces themselves are preferably of white metal devoid of plating.
In operation, the hame link operates in connection with the hames in the usual manner.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is V l. The improved hame link herein described curved to conform to the collar and comprising the body a, having arms a, a, centrally open between, as at b and sliding stay pieces, d, substantially as set forth.
'2. The improved hame link herein described comprising the body a, having the opening, 19, between and shoulders a a and sliding stay pieces cl, d, held away from the ends of said link by said shoulders substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with the Wire or rodlike body, at, having the ends turned toward one another and of reduced diameter and having an opening, 1), between, of stay pieces perforated near their opposite ends and adapted to slide across the opening, I), from one arm to the other to admit the insertion of the hames to the opposite ends of the link, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
