SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,074, dated May 22, 1894.

Be it known that I, LEANDER J. NOBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Menasha, inthe county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pails, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a strong, cheap and durable pail.
My invention relates particularly to the manner of hooping the pail, and consists in arranging wire hoops in recesses-or cut-away portions in the body of the pail in the manner hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a front elevation of a pail. or bucket with my improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical, central section thereof. Fig. 3 is a view on an enlarged scale showing the manner of securing the bottom of the bucket in place. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the hoops.
The body A, of the bucket may be made upof staves in the usual way. The bottom B, is also of usual construction, and is fitted in the croze or annular groove 1). I employ wire hoops O, and preferably weld them together by electricity at c. Preferably, I employ four hoops, and arrange them in annular recesses c, in the body of the bucket. These recesses are formed with horizontal, overhanging ledges c and Vertical or perpendicular surfaces 0 forming a groove substantially triangular in cross section. these grooves, the hoops fit closely. By this arrangement I am enabled to drive the hoops home in such manner as to produce a tight and durable connection, and when driven home the hoops will lie in the recesses, their outer surfaces being in line or substantially in line with the body of the bucket. In this way the buckets may be nested for transportation, there will be no danger of the .hoops being knocked 0E, and space iseconomized. The bottom hoop is arranged, as shown, below the bottom B. By this arrangement, the chine is made shorter and stronger than it would be if the hoop were'placed above the crozing. The surfaces 0 being perpendicular, there is not that liability for the hoops to crawl downwardly, as there is, or would be, when the hoops rest on inclined surfaces.
I claim as my invention 1. A pail having the hoops arranged in recesses formed with straight or perpendicular surfaces, forming with a horizontal ledge a seat for the hoop.
2. A pail, flaring from its lower end up- Wardly, having its hoops arranged in seats formed with perpendicular surfaces and horizontal ledges.
