Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. HAINES, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN MGLOBINAN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF ENAMELED CLOTH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5] ,997, dated January 9, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HAINES, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful article of manufacture, to wit, a new article of ()rnamented Cloth or Leather; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My improvement relates to the surface finish or coating of the cloth, leather, or other material, producing a new and beautiful finish and effect.
My new article of cloth is made by coating it,in the ordinary way, with a varnish composed of two or more varnishes or varnish substances, each having an independent and different amount of drying property, one much greater than the other, so that when admixed together and applied upon the cloth and dryed the effect will be, on account of the unequal drying properties of the varnish, to oorrugate or crystallize the surface of the varnish in a regular irregular manner, so that the cloth, when dried and ready for the market, will present an unequal surface, similar to frost-work on a window.
The cloth or leather used by me is of the usual description, and the process is the same as now employed. The only novelty is in the varnish, which, in combination'with the cloth, leather, or other suitable material, producesa new article of manufacture, as described, having more beauty and finish and much of the character of embossed cloth or leather formed by passing enameled goods through calenders or engraved rolls.
The varnish employed by me may be made of any suitable materials and in various ways and proportions. I prefer now to make it as follows: Five pounds of pulverized burnt umber is mixed in one gallon of raw linseed-oil and the whole boiled down, so that when cool it will be quite hard. 1 then take one and one-half gallons of raw linseed-oil and mix into it one pound of pulverized burnt umber and heat the same to 500. The two varnishes thus formed are mixed together and applied in the usual way.
WVhat I claim as a new article of manufacture, and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States, is-
An enameled cloth made substantially in the manner described.
W. H. HAINES.
