Description

' to cleanse them so the inks will not blend.
UNITED STATES PATENT Q-FFICE.
BENJAMIN F. ALLEN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN VARNISHES 0R COATINGS FOR PRINTERS lNKlNG-ROLLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,514, dated April 27, 1875; application filed April 9, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, BENJAMIN F. ALLEN, of Boston, Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful In] provementinGoatingfor Printers Liking-Rollers, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description My invention relates to rollers used for inking type; and it consistsin aprocess for renewing the surface, when necessary from any cause. Not only do the surfaces of these rollers become worn and need renewing, but it is well known to all printers that rollers having been used for black ink become worthless when colored ink is to used, as it is impossible To avoid this diificulty and renew the surface of the roller is the object of my invention. To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
I take the roller, made of any of the wellknown materials, and supposing it to have been used, I wash it as clean as possible. When dry, I apply a very thin coating of boiled or burnt oil, preferably linseed-oil, first mixed with a minute quantity of soap to prevent the oil from drying hard, and a small quantity of rosin, to give the surface a slightly sticky character. While I use soap and rosin, many other ingredients will readily suggest themselves, which may be used to produce the desired qualities in the surface of printers roller, qualities well understood by all persons skilled in the art of printing. By this simple process I am enabled readily to form an entirely new surface on any roller, and it can be repeated as frequently as a new surface may be required from any cause, thus greatly cheapening the expense of rollers, as the same rollers thus renewed may be used continuously for a number of years.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The process herein described for renewing the surface of printers rollers by a coating of varnish consisting of boiled oil, soap, and resin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
