SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,946, dated May 15, 1894.
Application filed July 5, 1892. Serial No. 439,001. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. GODFREY, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Buttons; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in that variety of cuff-buttons in which two oppositely-moving levers form the shoe or holding device by which the button is secured to a cuff or other article.
The object of this invention is to produce a button, of the nature described, in which the movement of one lever Willbe transmitted to simultaneously move the other in an opposite direction without the use of gears.
The further object of the invention is to produce a button which will be simple in construction and durable in operation.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the various co-operating parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim. v
Figure 1 represents a side view of the improved button showing thelevers in the closed position and indicating their position when spread apart to secure the cuff. Fig. 2 represents a back View of the improved button the levers being spread apart. Fig. 3 represents a front view of the same, portions thereof being broken away to more clearly show the inner construction. Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the head of the button. Fig. 5 represents an enlarged side view of the levers and their connecting and operating mechanism removed from the head.

In the drawings 6 indicates the head of the button which is formed of sheet-metal, the face being ornamented in any suitable manner by a design engraved thereon, or by a stone set therein; this head 5 has an annular flange 7 portions of the inner edge of which are cut away at 8-8 to form stops into which are fitted projections stamped from the plate 9 to prevent the independent rotation of the head 5. The plate 9 is stamped up to form a circular box, open at one side and having the other side slightly convex, the central portion of this convex side being cut away and the bearings 10-10 and 11--11 being bent up therefrom,-the lower edge of the plate 9 is bent inwardly to form the flange 12 against which the ring 13 is held. Journaled in the bearings 10--10 of the plate 9 are the square ends of the shaft 14 extending from which is the Ushaped curved lever 15; this shaft has also a bearing-shoulder 16 and a downward inwardly-extending arm 17 near the end of which is secured the pivot 18. The square ends of the shaft 19 are journaled in the bearings 1111 of the plate 9, this shaft having a bearing-shoulder 20 and a curved lever 21 adapted to move between the curved arms of the U-shaped lever 15, and extending from the lower portion of the shaft 19 is an arm 22 near the end of which is secured the pivot 23,this pivot 23 and that carried by the arm 17 being pivotally connected by the link 24.
