L. SWINDLB. LEAF TURNER.
No. 519,934. Patented May 15,, 1 894.
INVENTOH WITNESSES A TTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT @FFHQE.
LAFAYETTE SYVINDLE, OF FRANKLIN, ILLINOIS.
LEAF-TU RN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,934, dated May 15, 1894.
Application filed June 6,1893- To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LAFAYETTE SWINDLE, of Franklin, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Leaf-Turner, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved leaf turner, showing its application to a book. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the leaf turner detached from the book; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 33 in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device for turning the leaves of books of variouskinds, sheet music, &c.; also to provide means for readily referring to different parts of a book.
The invention is an improvement in the class of music-leaf turners having pivoted swinging arms to which fingers are pivoted in such manner as to adapt them to project upward and lie between the leaves of a music book.
The features of novelty are hereinafter described and claimed.
The frame A, forming the base of the instrument, is in the present case formed of two parts a a, provided with ears I) and connected pivotally by a pin 0 running through ears on both sides of the frame. The part CL of the frame is furnished with a plate d, which is prolonged beyond the pivotal connection for supporting the spring e. Upon the pin 0 are pivoted the armsfif',f ,f ,f the said arms being bent downwardly at right angles at their outer ends, and provided with annular thumb pieces g, which are each furnished with a filling h of silica slate mix ture or equivalent material which will receive an erasable pencil mark. The said arms are made of different lengths so that they will fold down one within the other, as shown in Fig. 1. To each arm, at the angle thereof, is pivoted a finger t, the pivoted end Serial No. 476.762- (No model.)
of each finger being provided with a square shoulder which is acted upon by a spring j secured to the arm and adapted to hold the finger in either an open or closed position. Upon the pivotal pin 0 is also placed a short arm f provided with a finger tand spring jlike those already described, but Without the thumbpiece. All of the armsfif, &c., are prolonged beyond the pivot to provide a shoulder which acts upon the spring e which serves to hold the arms in either of the two positions in which they may be placed. The parts a a are provided with spring clips B, B, by means of which they may be con nected with the cover of the book to which the leaf turner is applied. The part a of the frame is furnished with a U-shaped clip 7c, pivoted to the lower part of the frame and capable of engaging the extension d of the part a when the leaf turner is unfolded for use.
My improved leaf turner is applied to a book by opening the book at the place to which reference is to be made, raising up one of the fingers 2', opening the book to another reference and raising up another finger z, and so on until as many of the fingers are inserted between the leaves as are necessary for turning to the references. If desired, the leaf turner may be applied to the book, when the part a can be released by turning the clip 70, and the leaf turner and the book may be closed simultaneously, and when it is desired to use the book, the leaf turner and the book may be opened for use and the parts a a may be connected with the cover by turning the clip is.
When the leaf-turner is not in use, one part, a, of the frame is folded upon the other, a, and the arms f, f, 850., and fingers, c', then lie between and parallel thereto--as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a music-leaf turner, the pivoted arms f, f 850., the fingers, i, pivoted on the face of said arms and adapted to swing and fold parallel to the plane of the latter, and springs for holding the fingers in either the extended or folded position, as shown and described.
2. The improved music-leaf turner corn- 5 posed of the frame, formed of two parts hinged together and adapted to fold one upon the other, a series of angular arms, f f 8m, hinged to one of said parts and adapted to swing and fold, and folding fingers, pivoted to the arms, as shown, whereby, when the IQ frame is closed, the arms and fingers lie parallel to and between its two parts, as specified.
